Vacuum infusion is an efficient and versatile technique for laminating composite parts, often much quicker than other methods such as open molding or hand layup and capable of handling thick laminates.
FlexiClad(r) is very adaptable and compatible with most thermoset resins such as polyester, vinyl-ester and epoxy; however, the latter requires special consideration due to their higher viscosity at room temperature.
Polyester Reinforcements
Polyester resins are easy to work with and affordable compared to carbon/Kevlar fibers, and can produce lightweight components with excellent mechanical properties. timber machining Furthermore, they're much easier to work with than carbon fibers, and come in an assortment of shapes and sizes for you to use in making parts that have exceptional mechanical performance.
Infusion-specific reinforcements feature extra stitching, wider spaced fiber bundles, or flow media to aid the resin in penetrating and flowing through them for consistent infusion results. By choosing such reinforcements, achieving consistent infusion results becomes much simpler.
Vacuum infusion can be an ideal alternative to open molded/vacuum bagged wet layup, and is often far more manufacturing-friendly for complex or structurally demanding parts. Furthermore, it allows companies to reduce resin use for lighter products that save material costs - something especially helpful when working with high performance carbon/Kevlar composites. However, learning this process may take some practice; therefore investments in equipment, training, and quality control may be required for success.
Polyester Core
Polyester resins are typically utilized in vacuum infusion processes. This method is much less labor-intensive than wet layup and eliminates air inclusions; plus it allows multiple materials (e.g. vinyl-ester and foam) to be included within a part.
Vacuum infusion requires immense precision in every detail: making sure the bag fits perfectly and contains pleats; maintaining efficient airflow, keeping leaks out, and making sure resin flows through dry stack quickly and effectively. Thus it is crucial that VIP choose the appropriate fiber reinforcement, resin and core material combinations for their VIP process.
At first glance, this resin system may seem straightforward but there are several variables involved, including MEKP catalyst's volatile nature which should be handled carefully to reduce risks of fire or explosion; transporting the resin may require special containers; curing is also accelerated using heat which increases safety risks - it is therefore imperative that before beginning production using this resin system that you know exactly what you are doing and possess both training and equipment that suits you well.
Polyester Process Materials
Petroleum hydrocarbons serve as the main raw materials, which are then refined into ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid monomers before being combined in a high temperature/pressure reaction to form unsaturated polyester polymers for numerous uses, including packaging, audio/video tapes, electrical insulation materials and x-ray films.
Melted resin is extruded through spinnerets to form long threads, which are then twisted into polyester fibers for further processing and further altered using chemicals to achieve different properties.
Infusion processes must be carefully managed, including temperature regulation of both mold and polyester; optimal vacuum pump operation is important; feedline gaps must also be less compared to open molding processes;
Success lies in keeping air out and organizing and sorting dry stacks of material under the bag - especially for complex shapes with multiple plies or complex patterns. Hiring a company offering marked-and-cut kits from your CAD models might be worth your consideration in this case!
Polyester Infusion
As fabricators become more adept with vacuum infusion, its market share has rapidly expanded over that of pre-preg and hand layup for both high-end parts and lower spec parts. Vacuum infusion allows fabricators to lay up large areas quickly with minimal effort - which results in shorter cycle times overall.
Preparing parts for infusion fabrication involves many considerations. When it comes to vacuum systems and leak detection, having an effective oiled rotary vane vacuum pump with an adequate differential between outside air pressure and bag pressure is of primary importance. Selecting resin systems - typically epoxy, but polyester may also be chosen if certain performance criteria such as gel time or vapor pressure are being met must also be considered; also the catalyst choice plays an important part.
