Onychomycosis is especially common among diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of 10% efinaconazole solution among diabetic subjects, without restriction by nail plate involvement or glycemic control. Forty subjects were enrolled, with 36 reaching their final 50-week follow-up visit. Mycological cure was attained by 21 subjects (58.33%); 8 subjects (20%) attained either clinical cure (0% clinical involvement) or treatment success (≤10% clinical involvement). Glycemic control did not affect clinical outcome. The medication was well tolerated, with 4 local adverse events and no significant adverse events. The medication may represent a useful option for diabetic patients. In podiatric residency training, minimum activity volume numbers are used to assess surgical competency. The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized direct assessment form as a complement to minimum activity volume numbers. Sixteen attending physicians completed 121 direct assessment forms, evaluating six podiatric medicine and surgery residents. Evaluation scores were highly correlated with residency year. Resident feedback was positive, with the open-response portion identified as especially useful. Although further efforts may help refine this approach, the use of standardized, competency-based direct assessment has the potential to improve the training of podiatric medicine and surgery residents. Researchers often do not publish negative results; positive outcome reported bias remains rampant. This problem is pervasive throughout the medical continuum. Failure to release less than favorable results could be construed as ethically and morally inappropriate. Failure to make public less than favorable outcomes stifles the scientific process and is contrary to the precepts of the Declaration of Helsinki and the World Health Organization. Sponsors and researchers must embrace the ideal of publishing well-designed studies with negative results. Offloading the diabetic foot remains the major consideration for ulceration prevention and healing. This narrative literature review presents a brief overview of current guidelines for offloading the diabetic foot and discusses the implications that come with offloading treatment modalities and their effects on the kinetic chain of the lower extremity. We also present the latest innovative studies from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science that advance the knowledge in this field and provide avenues for future research opportunities. Falls present a tremendous challenge to health care systems. This article reviews the literature from the previous 5 years (2014-2019) in terms of methods to assess fall risk and potential steps that can be taken to reduce fall risk for patients visiting podiatric clinics. With regard to assessing fall risk, we discuss the role of a thorough medical history and podiatric assessments of foot problems and deformities that can be performed in the clinic. With regard to fall prevention we consider the role of shoe modification, exercise, pain relief, surgical interventions, and referrals. A higher incidence of plantar verrucae, commonly known as plantar warts, has been shown in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Several strains of human papillomavirus are associated with clinical manifestations of plantar verrucae. In this literature review, we examine the incidence and clinical manifestations of plantar verrucae in dual coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus and human papillomavirus. We discuss changes in the clinical scenario brought about by the introduction of human immunodeficiency virus antiretroviral therapy. As a clinical condition with notable presence in podiatric medicine, we also confer these findings to increase clinical awareness with treatment modalities. Hypovitaminosis D has been established as a global health problem. As an important regulator of skeletal health homeostasis throughout one's life, optimal levels are presumed. Debate, however, still exists surrounding the definition of normal vitamin D levels and what affect hypovitaminosis D has on fracture prevention, fracture healing, and successful arthrodesis. A literature search failed to show any level 1 studies examining hypovitaminosis D and union rates in foot and/or ankle arthrodesis procedures. Several retrospective studies do point to some sort of association between nonunion and hypovitaminosis D. This is a prospective clinical trial comparing Wound Tracker Professional iOS compatible device with Acetate tracing and Aranz medical wound measuring systems. The study compares 3 different wound measurement systems in 20 patients. Wound Tracker Professional device demonstrated statistically significant difference when compared with the acetate tracing; however, there was no statistically significant difference when compared with the Aranz system. Wound Tracker Professional iOS compatible system is an easily accessible and affordable wound measuring system that can easily be implemented by the clinician in a wound care setting.
