Carbon gels are commonly prepared by the condensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde. The as-prepared polymers are further aged and sintered at a high temperature in an inert atmosphere to form cross-linked and intertwined porous structures. Owing to its large specific area and narrow pore size distribution, this kind of material is very appropriate for mass transfer, substrate absorption, and product desorption from the pores. In recent years, carbon gels have been discovered to function as effective hybrid materials with TiO2 for photocatalytic applications. They could act as efficient deep-traps for photo-induced holes, which decreases the recombination probability of photo-induced carriers and lengthens their lifetime. In this mini-review, we will discuss the state-of-the-art paragon examples of carbon gels/TiO2 composite materials applied in photo(electro)catalysis. The major challenges and gaps of its application in this field will also be emphasized.The two Dimensional (2D) materials such as MXene and graphene, are most promising materials, as they have attractive properties and attract numerous application areas like sensors, supper capacitors, displays, wearable devices, batteries, and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding. The proliferation of wireless communication and smart electronic systems urge the world to develop light weight, flexible, cost effective EMI shielding materials. The MXene and graphene mixed with polymers, nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterial, nanowires, and ions are used to create materials with different structural features under different fabrication techniques. The aerogel based hybrid composites of MXene and graphene are critically reviewed and correlate with structure, role of size, thickness, effect of processing technique, and interfacial interaction in shielding efficiency. Further, freeze drying, pyrolysis and hydrothermal treatment is a powerful tool to create excellent EMI shielding aerogels. We present here a review of MXene and graphene with various polymers and nanomaterials and their EMI shielding performances. This will help to develop a more suitable composite for modern electronic systems.The current study aimed at assessing the effects of exposure to Particulate Matter (PM) on the incidence of respiratory diseases in a sub-sample of participants in the longitudinal analytical epidemiological study in Pisa, Italy. Individual risk factors recorded during the 1991 survey were considered, and new cases of respiratory diseases were ascertained until 2011. Average PM10 and PM2.5 exposures (µg/m3, year 2011) were estimated at the residential address (1-km2 resolution) through a random forest machine learning approach, using a combination of satellite data and land use variables. Multivariable logistic regression with Firth's correction was applied. The median (25th-75th percentile) exposure levels were 30.1 µg/m3 (29.9-30.7 µg/m3) for PM10 and 19.3 µg/m3 (18.9-19.4 µg/m3) for PM2.5. Incidences of rhinitis and chronic phlegm were associated with increasing PM2.5 OR = 2.25 (95% CI 1.07, 4.98) per unit increase (p.u.i.) and OR = 4.17 (1.12, 18.71) p.u.i., respectively. Incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was associated with PM10 OR = 2.96 (1.50, 7.15) p.u.i. These results provide new insights into the long-term respiratory health effects of PM air pollution.Melatonin (MLT) is a vital signaling molecule that regulates multiple physiological processes in higher plants. In the current study, the role of MLT in regulating chilling tolerance and its possible mechanisms in litchi fruit during storage at ambient temperatures after its removal from refrigeration was investigated. The results show that the application of MLT (400 μM, dipping for 20 min) to 'Baitangying' litchi fruit effectively delayed the development of chilling injury (CI) while inhibiting pericarp discoloration, as indicated by higher chromacity values (L*, a*, b*) and anthocyanin levels. MLT treatment suppressed the enhancements of the relative electrical conductivity (REC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, which might contribute to the maintenance of membrane integrity in litchi fruit. MLT treatment slowed the decline in cellular energy level, as evidenced by higher adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content and a higher energy charge (EC), which might be ascribed to the increased activities of enzymes associated with energy metabolism including H+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), and cytochrome C oxidase (CCO). In addition, MLT treatment resulted in enhanced proline accumulation, which was likely a consequence of the increased activities of ornithine-δ-aminotransferase (OAT) and Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS) and the suppressed activity of proline dehydrogenase (PDH). These results suggest that the enhanced chilling tolerance of litchi fruit after MLT treatment might involve the regulation of energy and proline metabolism.Ever since the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 [...].The effects of microorganisms on plant-insect interactions have usually been underestimated. While plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are known to induce plant defenses, endosymbiotic bacteria hosted by herbivorous insects are often beneficial to the host. Here, we aimed to assess whether PGPR-induced defenses in broad bean plants impact the pea aphid, depending on its genotype and the presence of endosymbionts. We estimated aphid reproduction, quantified defense- and growth-related phytohormones by GC-MS, and measured different plant growth and physiology parameters, after PGPR treatment. In addition, we recorded the feeding behavior of aphids by electropenetrography. We found that the PGPR treatment of broad bean plants reduced the reproduction of one of the pea aphid clones. We highlighted a phenomenon of PGPR-induced plant defense priming, but no noticeable plant growth promotion. The main changes in aphid probing behavior were related to salivation events into phloem sieve elements. We suggest that the endosymbiont Hamiltonella defensa played a key role in plant-insect interactions, possibly helping aphids to counteract plant-induced resistance and allowing them to develop normally on PGPR-treated plants.
