Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), a surgical technique that coapts proximal stumps of cut nerves to distal motor nerves of adjacent muscles, has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment and prevention of neuroma pain. The objective of this study was to describe the surgical technique for TMR of the saphenous nerve, while providing a retrospective review. Between January 2015 and December 2018, 18 patients underwent TMR of the saphenous nerve 1 nonamputee patient with chronic pain after ankle surgery and 17 amputee patients (10 for relief of chronic postamputation neuroma pain and phantom pain and 7 at the time of amputation for prevention of these symptoms). Six patients were lost to follow up; 2 patients had recurrent pain; and 10 patients had reduced or no pain after TMR surgery. TMR is a successful technique for the management of traumatic neuroma pain in both the amputee and nonamputee populations, and in this study, we describe the technique for saphenous nerve TMR. We examined patient satisfaction based on linguistic analysis of social media posts showing postoperative results and compared them to aesthetic quality ratings from plastic surgeons. Methods Fifty publicly available images of subcutaneous mastectomy postoperative results of female-to-male gender transition patients were selected from Instagram. The photograph's corresponding post and comments were then analyzed for sentiment through the IBM Watson tone analyzer, which rated the presence of joy on a continuous scale from 0 to 1. Three plastic surgeons rated aesthetic quality on an ordinal scale of 1 to 10. learn more Results of both analyses were then compared. Results Joy was rated as a mean value of 0.74 (±0.13) in posts and 0.81 (±0.13) in comments. The mean ratings of results were found to be chest contour 6.1 of 10 (±1.7), scar position 5.3 of 10 (±1.8), scar quality 4.8 of 10 (±1.9), nipple position 5.2 of 10 (±1.9), and nipple quality 5.1 of 10 (±2.0). A positive relationship was found between post joy and nipple quality (r = 0.33, P = 0.0169). There were no other associations detected between level of joy and the ratings of results by plastic surgeons (P > 0.05). Conclusions Despite wide variety in surgical appearance, there is a high level of satisfaction and community support. This is in contrast to the low-quality ratings by plastic surgeons. The results demonstrate the strong psychological and functional underpinnings chest masculinization has for patients. In addition, there was also a demand to create options to use the whey extracted during the production of cheeses. Whey can be used as an ingredient in the development of many products. Therefore, knowing its composition is a matter of utmost importance, considering that the reference methods of food analysis require time, trained labor and expensive reagents for its execution. Methods Goat whey samples produced in winter and summer were submitted to proximate composition analysis (moisture, total solids, ashes, proteins, fat and carbohydrates by difference) using reference methods and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The spectral data was preprocessed by baseline correction and the Savitzky-Golay derivative. The models were built using Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) with raw and preprocessed data for each dependent variable (proximate composition parameter). Results The average whey composition values obtained using the referenced methods were in accordance with the consulted literature. The composition did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) between the summer and winter whey samples. The PLSR models were made available using the following figures of merit coefficients of determination of the calibration and prediction models (R 2cal and R 2pred, respectively) and the Root Mean Squared Error Calibration and Prediction (RMSEC and RMSEP, respectively). The best models used raw data for fat and protein determinations and the values obtained by NIRS for both parameters were consistent with their referenced methods. Consequently, NIRS can be used to determine fat and protein in goat whey. © 2020 Galdino et al."Higher" termites have been able to colonize all tropical and subtropical regions because of their ability to digest lignocellulose with the aid of their prokaryotic gut microbiota. Over the last decade, numerous studies based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon libraries have largely described both the taxonomy and structure of the prokaryotic communities associated with termite guts. Host diet and microenvironmental conditions have emerged as the main factors structuring the microbial assemblages in the different gut compartments. Additionally, these molecular inventories have revealed the existence of termite-specific clusters that indicate coevolutionary processes in numerous prokaryotic lineages. However, for lack of representative isolates, the functional role of most lineages remains unclear. We reconstructed 589 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the different gut compartments of eight higher termite species that encompass 17 prokaryotic phyla. By iteratively building genome trees for each clade, we significantly improved the initial automated assignment, frequently up to the genus level.
