Large Bedside Cot: A Simple Definition
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as co-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to allow parents to rest close to their babies at night without the risk of SIDS. However best bedside cot are only recommended for use up to 6 months when your baby will be required to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model features a lift-off bassinet you can use around the house and the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to put together and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However they are typically used for children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes to choose from - standard and large - both of which convert into a toddler bed or cot bed. If you want your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a bigger cot, it's a great idea to pick the larger size.

Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, liked that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too big for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to get her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also comes with an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.

Height

When choosing a crib for your bed, choose one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It should also be able of being dropped to the ground to allow you to lift your baby closer to you for feedings at night or soothing. This feature is especially useful if you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their children from their standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level and others prefer a higher elevation to provide them with more stability. One of our mum testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It has a collapsible side you can press at the push of a button.

Keep in mind that a bedside or bassinet should not be used until your baby can hold their head up without assistance generally around 6 months. This is due to the danger of being suffocated. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert an existing bedside or bassinet into a cot you will have to take the sides off as soon as they are ready to do so. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of bedside cribs, from basic to lavish. The more luxurious options may include features such as a built-in nightlight and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to get your baby's food in the right place. You can also find models that can be transformed into an infant bed or a toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesareans, or those who need to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying it was easy to use and made her baby easier - especially after her c-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's bigger than the other cribs we've tested, but it folds down into its travel bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib she explained how it was created with parents and babies in mind. It has a great design that is incredibly simple to operate and is extremely durable. She said that the swivelling bassinet base was brilliant since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier for moms who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

The most important security characteristic of a bedside cot is that it can be easily raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their child when they require to feed, comfort them, or change their nappies. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from an C-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the press of a button, so you can effortlessly lift your baby without having to get out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. It is also important to avoid adding anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds which can be converted into other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. The attachment can be permanently attached or disconnected when the product's not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
