Buy a Motorcycle Driving License A1 and A2
The first step to becoming a full-time biker is to purchase an A1 motorcycle driving licence and A2. It permits drivers to operate a motorcycle up to 125cc and with a maximum power of 11kW power.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT is a compulsory course required before you can buy a motorcycle driving licence A1. The CBT includes classroom and practical training. The classroom portion of the CBT will teach you the security aspects of riding motorbikes and the practical portion is done using state-provided motorbikes. Your instructor will instruct you how to operate the basic controls on the bike, and will demonstrate pertinent low-to-mid speed maneuvers.
The Module 1 test requires you to demonstrate various maneuvers to the examiner in an approved centre. It may sound difficult but your instructor will have walked you through the exact same process numerous times, so you'll practically be performing it with your eyes closed. The test is divided into two parts. The first one will require you to demonstrate your ability to "wheel" on a motorbike while the second requires that you navigate a figure-of-eight. You must demonstrate your ability to effectively use your mirrors and maintain a 2-second gap between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
After passing the Module 1, you can proceed to the A2 licence, which permits you to ride a 125cc motorbike or scooter with a power output of up to 35 kW. You can also upgrade to the full A licence after two years of riding with the A2 licence, which unlocks bikes with a power outputs of up to 47 kW.
A full-time A license is only available to riders over 24. However, if you take the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) you can skip the A1 and A2 tests and move onto the full category A bike when you turn 21.
To pass the Module 1 test, you have to pass with a minimum score of 10 minor faults. These can be anything from not using your mirrors correctly to not maintaining a 2-second gap to vehicles in front of you. You should also be able to perform lifesaver checks without causing other drivers to brake or swerve. The examiner is also going examine your road positioning and your hazard perception. This is why you need to prepare well for the test.
Theory Test
You must pass an exam in order to get a motorcycle driver's license A1. This is not a car exam, and the questions are tailored to motorbikes. It is a multiple-choice exam with 50 questions, and you have 57 minutes to complete it. You can prepare by studying the Highway Code and practising answering questions from the sample. After you have passed the theory test you can take your A1 practical test. Practical Test
The practical test is a crucial element of your education program and is the final step before you are able to purchase a motorcycle license. The course will prepare you for the actual test, which will consist of two sections referred to as modules one and two. Both modules will follow the same format, however they will be different in the way they are conducted.
Module one is focused on closed circuit-riding, while the second module is on public roads. The tests are based upon your riding abilities that you've learned during your CBT or motorcycle classes. They are designed to assess your ability to manage the motorcycle and prove that you are aware of the risks that come with motorcycling.
In both of the modules you will have to complete a variety of exercises, including right and left circles on the road and figure-eights. You'll also be required to execute an uncontrolled U-turn. You'll need a bike for the test, along with an individual driver to transport the examiner. The driver must be at least 21 years old and able demonstrate the ability to safely operate the vehicle and motorcycle.
Once you've passed the test in practice after which you're able to purchase the motorcycle with a motor size up to 125cc and a power output of no more than 11kW (around 14.8 horsepower). This licence category is ideal for riders who want to start off small and progress slowly as they gain experience. It's worth mentioning that you cannot carry passengers on a bike that has an A1 licence.

It's important to think about your future plans and level of comfort when deciding which license you should apply for. Some users may find their A1 license too restrictive and will opt for the A2 route and others might want to obtain the A license as soon as they can.
Upgrade to A2
The upgrade to A2 is the first step towards obtaining a license that is unrestricted. This permits you to use motorcycles up to 125cc with or without a sidecar. It also allows you to ride up to 35kW/47hp. This is quite an increase in power over what the A1 license provides. It also lets you carry passengers and ride on motorways.
The new rules are part of a government-wide policy to reduce regulations whenever feasible, to the benefit of both riders and drivers. The government believes that the changes will make it easier and more attractive for people to take up riding for fun or even as a profession and that's why they have allowed people to complete their motorcycle tests on lower powered vehicles than they previously been permitted. However, these lower-powered vehicles must still meet other requirements of the test category A2 including the cylinder's capacity and the power-to-weight ratio.
To upgrade from an A1 licence to a category A non-restricted licence you must be a minimum of 24 years old and have a valid theory test pass certificate. You must have completed the A2 practical test within two years after passing your CBT or have taken the entire progressive route, starting with the A2 restricted licence and moving to the full A licence after two years of riding.
There are other restrictions, for example, you must have held an A2 licence for at least two years to be eligible for the upgrade. The cost of upgrading to a category-A license is around EUR400. This includes the DGT fee psychotechnical test, theory and practical exams and any driving school-related practice which may be required.
This is substantially less than the total cost of getting an A1 license, which includes the cost of the CBT, practical and theory tests. It is because many people already have the training required for A2, and the first steps can be skipped. This doesn't impact the time needed to complete the process as, in most cases, people have a general idea of what they need to complete.
