The impact of weight mismatch between donors and recipients (D-R) undergoing living-donor kidney transplant (LDKT) versus weight-matched deceased donor kidney transplant (DDKT) is not established.
To determine whether absolute weight mismatch between D-R affects graft survival following LDKT and how this relates to graft outcomes with DDKT when D-R are weight matched.
We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients to determine the association of weight-mismatched D-R (>50 kg, 30-50kg or 10-30kg ((D<R); (D>R) and <10 kg (D=R)) with death-censored graft failure in US LDKT recipients from 2006 to 2017. We also explored outcomes relative to weight-matched DDKT and finally, the impact of combined D-R weight-sex mismatch.
In LDKT, the risk of graft loss was highest in the setting of D<R (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.05-1.56 for >50kg difference relative to D=R); however, this was still lower risk than weight-matched DDKT. D-R sex and combined weight-sex mismatch were only important for male recipients (HR 1.47, 95% CI 1.27-1.71 for a male recipient >30kg larger than their female donor, relative to weight-matched male donor-male recipient). This remained superior to weight-sex-matched DDKT however.
D-R weight-sex mismatch is important in LDKT; however, graft survival remains superior to proceeding with matched DDKT. Optimizing D-R matching in LDKT could be facilitated through a national kidney-paired donation registry. LDKT weight-sex mismatch should not be deferred in favor of DDKT.

LDKT weight-sex mismatch should not be deferred in favor of DDKT.Traditionally, direct-reading instruments have been used to directly determine the concentrations of indoor air pollutants that may exceed the regulation limits. However, these instruments cannot directly assess the potential health hazards of these pollutants to humans. A-1210477 In this study, we developed and improved a bacterial reverse mutation assay (Ames test) by using a direct gas exposure module to directly determine the mutagenicity of indoor air quality using five tester bacterial strains (TA98, TA100, TA102, TA1535, and TA1537). Thereafter, the module was used to evaluate the effects of exposure time, different concentrations of HCHO or toluene, and mutagenic activities. We found that TA100 was the most sensitive strain and was reverted by relatively lower concentrations of 0.035 ppm HCHO. Furthermore, 50 ppm of toluene exposures caused a significant increase in the number of revertant colonies of TA100 without S9 activation at the 1.5-8-h exposure time intervals. Our findings provide new evidence that gaseous HCHO exposure could display weak but direct, time-dependent, and dose-dependent mutagenic activities. The weak, direct-acting, indirect-acting, and time-dependent mutagen of 50 ppm toluene was also confirmed. Moreover, our improved Ames module and the exposure conditions provided in this study can be further applied to evaluate the mutagenicity of indoor air quality.
Disparities exist for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients between those in developed countries and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To improve HNC care globally, collaborations between the United States and LMICs have been established. Our objectives are (1) define trends of collaborative HNC publications among LMICs and the United States and (2) assess the global distribution of these publications by region.
A Scopus search identified all HNC research publications during 2009 to 2018. These were then categorized by type (basic vs. clinical) and by global regions.
Five thousand one hundred and seventy collaborative publications were identified, of which 41% were basic science and 59% clinical. The highest rate of collaborative publications for both basic science and clinical papers was seen in the East Asia/Pacific region.

These ions are powerful allergens and carcinogens and their uncontrolled leaching may be avoided by surface coatings. Therefore, bioactive glasses (BGs) became a vital biomedical material, which can form a biologically active phase of hydroxycarbonate apatite on their surface when in contact with physiological fluids. To reduce the high coefficient of friction and the brittle nature of BGs, polymers are normally incorporated to avoid the high-temperature sintering/densification of ceramic-only coatings. For medical application, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is now used for polymer (organic) and ceramic (inorganic) components at room temperature due to its simplicity, control of coating thickness and uniformity, low cost of equipment, ability to coat substrates of intricate shape and to supply thick films in composite form, high purity of deposits as well as no phase transformation during coating. Although extensive research has been conducted on polymer/inorganic composite coatings, only some studies have reported multifunctional properties, such as biological antibacterial activity, enhanced cell adhesion, controlled drug release ability, and mechanical properties. This review will focus on biodegradable coatings, including zien, chitosan, gelatin, cellulose loaded with antibacterial drugs/metallic ions/natural herbs on biostable substrates (PEEK/PMMA/PCL/PLLA layers), which have the potential of multifunctional coating for metallic implants.
