PURPOSE The purpose of this article was to investigate and report the implementation of evidence-based design (EBD) principles relating to user controls into hospital renovation projects. BACKGROUND Progress requires the application of the most recent knowledge and technology. When it comes to the design and construction of healthcare facilities, the latest knowledge comes in the form of EBD research. EBD is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes. The desired outcomes of EBD recommendations include improvements to enhance user control. User control factors include the individual control over bed position, air temperature, lights, sound, and natural light. METHOD A list of recommendations from existing EBD literature related to user controls was compiled. Construction documents from 30 recent healthcare facility renovation projects across the United States were obtained and analyzed. Implementation levels for the EBD categories of user controls were reported. RESULTS The findings indicate relatively extensive industry use of EBD principles relating to user control of temperature, lights, and natural lighting. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that EBD recommendations related to user controls are being adopted in practice at consistently high levels. These findings also reveal that there are still areas of potential improvement which could inform those who influence or determine building design, codes, standards, and guidelines. The results are helpful to owners, designers, and contractors by providing a glimpse into how well the industry is recognizing and implementing known best practices. The findings likewise introduce new opportunities for further research which could lead to additional improvement in the healthcare facilities of the future. We describe the syntheses of phenolic compounds, 4-[(1E, 3E, 5E)-6-(4-octyloxyphenyl)hexa-1,3,5-trien-1-yl]benzene-1,2-diol (1) and 3-(n-dodecyloxy) phenol (2), isolated from Piper betle. The triene moiety of 4-[(1E, 3E, 5E)-6-(4-octyloxyphenyl)hexa-1,3,5-trien-1-yl]benzene-1,2-diol was formed via two different methods, the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction and the McMurry coupling reaction. The spectral data of synthesized compounds show differences with those of reported as the naturally occurring compounds. We investigated the role of triterpene barbinervic acid from Eugenia punicifolia dichloromethane extract in vasopressor responses. Renal arteries were cannulated and perfused with Krebs-Hepes solution. Changes in aorta isometric tension were recorded and transferred to a data acquisition system. Cumulative curves were constructed based on the maximum effect of agonists. Barbinervic acid reduced the renal tonus induced by NA in a NO-dependent manner (IC50 = 30 μM). Triterpene (70 μM) also induced rapid and transient relaxation in aorta that had been precontracted with K+ (53.2 ± 0.05%) or phenylephrine (36.7 ± 0.05%). In silico data revealed two possible active sites for interactions between barbinervic acid and NO synthase. Barbinervic acid showed a vasodilator effect and could potentially be used as a template for developing new molecules for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.Thirty semicarbazone and thiosemicarbazone derivatives (2a-w and 4a-g) from chalcones containing furan and thiophene ring were designed and synthesized. They were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The crystal structure of compound 2r was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c. The insecticidal activity of the synthesized compounds was screened against Leucania separata and Pieris rapae using beta-cypermethrin as the comparative standard. The results displayed that most of them had remarkable insecticidal activity. Among them, compounds 2e-g showed better activity than beta-cypermethrin against L. separata and P. rapae. Compound 2p also possessed a better activity than beta-cypermethrin against P. rapae. The insecticidal activities of these compounds have been reported for the first time.BACKGROUND Malnutrition and food insecurity are major challenges in Somalia, particularly among small children living in internally displaced person (IDP) camps. Poor diet has been identified as a key driver of malnutrition in young children who depend for their diets on their household's socioeconomic standing and access to food, as well as on the family's caring and feeding practices. OBJECTIVE To assess the dietary diversity and identify the factors associated with it among children (6-23 months) in Somalian IDP camps. METHODS We used a cross-sectional survey conducted in 11 IDP camps in Somalia in June 2014 and in June 2015. selleck chemical A total of 3188 children aged 6 to 23 months were surveyed. Child diets were assessed using food frequency questionnaires, and dietary diversity was categorized using the minimum child dietary diversity (MDDC) indicator. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify the factors associated with the children's dietary diversity. We built and compared 2 models using alternatively the household dietary diversity score (HDDS) and the food consumption score (FCS) as food security proxies. RESULTS Around 15% of children in IDP camps reached the minimum dietary diversity. Overall, our results confirm that not only are food security proxies the factors most associated with MDDC, but HDDS performs better than FCS. In addition, results identify that women as key decision-maker in the household, duration of household permanence in the settlement, women's physiological status, frequency of milk feeding to child, type of toilet, and measles vaccination are positively associated with MDDC. CONCLUSIONS To improve child dietary diversity in IDP camps, food security interventions should be broadened to include female empowerment and inclusive nutrition education (encouraging male participation) programs, as well as initiatives targeting children who do not live with pregnant or lactating women and that can support families beyond the first months after their arrival.
