Drugs affecting dopaminergic neurotransmission may exert toxic and beneficial effects that persist after discontinuation by modulating gene expression in key brain regions. Although ischemic stroke is the most frequent embolic event associated with AF, embolization to other sites in the pulmonary and systemic circulations may occasionally occur. To avert the risk of embolization, long-term oral anticoagulation therapy is recommended for all AF patients if the CHA2DS2-VASC score is at least 1 for men and at least 2 for women. Since anticoagulant therapy is associated with an increased risk of bleeding, the choice of oral anticoagulant agent should be made by careful consideration of the benefit-to-risk ratio. The use of a newer class of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) as an alternative to the anti-vitamin K (AVK) anticoagulants (warfarin, acenocumarol, etc.) can help mitigate the need for periodic monitoring of International Normalized Ratio (INR) and adverse bleeding events that are commonly associated with the use of AVK anticoask of developing depression or dementia between the groups.

To quantify the annual healthcare resource utilization, costs and mortality rate for a large cohort of Italian patients with compensated (CC) and decompensated cirrhosis (DC).

A population-based cohort study was conducted through the data-linkage of mortality for all-cause, hospitalizations and outpatient drugs and service databases of the Campania Region. All adults hospitalized with cirrhosis diagnosis (2007-2015) were grouped in CC and DC (prevalent patients) on January 1, 2016 and followed for 1-year. Incident patients with DC (2015) were also retrieved and followed from discharge date up to 1-year. Negative binomial regression was used to estimate Incidence Rate Ratios (IRRs) for predictors of all-cause hospitalizations. In our experimental study, we analyzed the presence and implications of several inflammatory cytokines in the corneal tissues of patients suffering from keratoconus by immunohistochemical analysis.

The analysis showed increased levels of inflammatory factors in the pathological tissues compared to controls, confirming that KC cannot be considered an entirely non-inflammatory pathology and that its etiopathogenesis includes several chronic inflammatory events.

In the light of these results, the classification of KC as an inflammatory pathology or as a pathology related to inflammation might be useful in directing future research aimed at developing effective anti-inflammatory therapies to pharmacologically target the inflammatory mediators which contribute to the development and progression of the disease.
