Background Sea vegetables are rich sources of nutrients as well as bioactive components that are linked to metabolic health improvement. Algal polysaccharides improve satiety and modulate gut microbiota while proteins, peptides, and phenolic fractions exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects. Objective We tested the hypothesis that dietary supplementation with either Pacific dulse (Palmaria mollis, red algae) or wakame (Undaria pinnatifida, brown algae) could remediate metabolic complications in high-fat diet-induced obesity. Methods Individually caged C57BL/6J mice (n = 8) were fed ad libitum with either a low-fat diet (LFD), 10% kcal fat; high-fat diet (HFD), 60% kcal fat; HFD + 5% (wtwt) dulse (HFD + D); or HFD + 5% (wtwt) wakame (HFD + W) for 8 weeks. Food intake and weight gain were monitored weekly. Glucose tolerance, hepatic lipids, fecal lipids, and plasma markers were evaluated, and the gut microbiome composition was assessed. Results Despite the tendency of higher food and calommation, and gut microbial balance were improved, showing therapeutic promise and warranting eventual mechanistic elucidations."Interventional psychiatry" has been proposed as a name for the emerging psychiatric subspecialty of neuromodulation, or brain stimulation. The practices of electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation are rapidly expanding. Moreover, research techniques, such as neuronavigation and electrophysiology, are already translating to the clinic, further emphasizing the need for training paradigms to keep pace. The purpose of this article is to provide practical guidance for psychiatry residents who seek further training in this emerging subspecialty. It describes a training track developed at the Medical University of South Carolina that can be adopted by residents at other institutions.Sleep duration and lifespan vary greatly across Animalia. Human studies have demonstrated that ageing reduces the ability to obtain deep restorative sleep, and this may play a causative role in the development of age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Animal models are widely used in sleep and ageing studies. Importantly, in contrast to human studies, evidence from laboratory rodents suggests that sleep duration is increased with ageing, while evidence for reduced sleep intensity and consolidation is inconsistent. Here we discuss two possible explanations for these species differences. First, methodological differences between studies in humans and laboratory rodents may prevent straightforward comparison. Second, the role of ecological factors, which have a profound influence on both ageing and sleep, must be taken into account. We propose that the dynamics of sleep across the lifespan reflect both age-dependent changes in the neurobiological substrates of sleep as well as the capacity to adapt to the environment.We focus on three strategies for renal regenerative medicine; administering cells to replace damaged tissue, promoting endogenous regeneration, and growing stem cell-derived organs. Mouse kidney regeneration can be promoted by stem cells injected into the circulation which do not become new kidney tissue but seem to secrete regeneration-promoting humoral factors. This argues against direct replacement but encourages developing pharmacological stimulators of endogenous regeneration. Simple 'kidneys' have been made from stem cells, but there is a large gap between what has been achieved and a useful transplantable organ. Most current work aims to stimulate endogenous regeneration or to grow new organs but much remains to be done; misplaced hype about short-term prospects of regenerative medicine helps neither researchers nor patients.Purpose Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common lymphoproliferative disorder in the western world. AZD4573 cost The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) or the optic nerve in CLL, however, is rare. We report a case of a previously untreated patient with CLL whose first manifestation of the disease was a progressive visual loss caused by optic neuropathy. Observations Clinical manifestations, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and automated visual fields pointed to the diagnosis of neuropathy. Leukemic involvement of the CNS was confirmed after cells suggestive of CLL were found by cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Optic nerve infiltration is thought to be the cause of this optic neuropathy, and the clinical course and treatment are described herein. Conclusions When readily diagnosed, optic nerve infiltration is a rare, yet manageable complication of CLL.Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious public health problem that has, at best, modest treatment response-potentially due to its heterogeneous clinical presentation. One way to parse the heterogeneity is to investigate the role of particular features of MDD, an endeavor that can also help identify novel and focal targets for treatment and prevention efforts. Our R01 focuses on the feature of psychomotor disturbance (e.g., psychomotor agitation (PmA) and retardation (PmR)), a particularly pernicious feature of MDD, that has not been examined extensively in MDD. Aim 1 is comparing three groups of individuals-those with current MDD (n = 100), remitted MDD (n = 100), and controls (n = 50)-on multiple measures of PmR and PmA (assessed both in the lab and in the subjects' natural environment). Aim 2 is examining the structural (diffusion MRI) and functional (resting state fMRI) connectivity of motor circuitry of the three groups as well as the relation between motor circuitry and the proposed indicators of PmR and PmA. Aim 3 is following up with subjects three times over 18 months to evaluate whether motor symptoms change in tandem with overall depressive symptoms and functioning over time and/or whether baseline PmR/PmA predicts course of depression and functioning. Aim 3 is particularly clinically significant. Finding that motor functioning and overall depression severity co-vary over time, or that motor variables predict subsequent change in overall depression severity, would support the potential clinical utility of these novel, reliable, and easily administered motor assessments.
