How to Buy a Motorcycle Driving License A1 and A2
A1 is a fantastic step for those who are beginning to learn. It gives them more training and more riding privileges.
It also gives you the freedom to ride without L plates or carry a passenger and also to drive on motorways. You will need to pass a test on theory as well as complete the training modules 1 and 2. The cost of a licence including CBT and the theory test, is around PS650.
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT is a requirement for obtaining a motorcycle license. The CBT includes classroom instruction on highway safety and road code and riding on the roads for a minimum of 2 hours with a professional instructor. In this time you'll begin on less crowded roads, and gradually move up to busier ones. Your instructor will help improve your confidence and develop abilities so that you can move on to driving on your own.
Your instructor will confirm that you have passed the CBT. You can then take the DL196 form to receive your CBT certification. This will allow you to ride any moped or motorbike up to 125cc, provided it's displaying red L-plates front and rear. You can also carry a pillion rider and use a motorway with this licence. However the licence expires after 2 years and you will need to take a fresh CBT course to maintain your licence.
You can go for an A1 licence after passing your CBT and theory test, or choose to go with the Direct Access Scheme (DAS). This option is available to those who are older than 24 years old, and it enables you to upgrade directly from an A2 licence without the need to pass the CBT or theory test. However, you'll need to be able to pass module 1 and 2 of the theory test.
The module 1 and 2 modules of the theory test are both computer-based and comprise of multiple-choice tests on topics like airworthiness, speed limits, and road signs. You'll need to get at least 42 points out of 50 to pass the test. The module 2 test, on the other hand, involves taking a bike out onto the road and performing a series of tasks. This includes showing proper lane positioning, turning at junctions, executing an appropriate U-turn, and paying attention to traffic signals.
The cost of completing the practical and theory tests will differ based on your location and what type of motorcycle you'll be using, but you should expect to pay between PS400 and PS900plus for a full-time training in module 1 and 2. You'll also need an appropriate motorcycle for the A2 license. It could range from a Honda Monkey, to a Triumph Street Twin, or the BMW F800R.
Motorcycle Theory Test (MTT).
You need to pass the motorcycle theory test (known as Module 1 and Module 2) before you can take the practical test. The MTT is similar to the car theory test, but is specifically for motorcycles. There is a lot to be absorbed and you'll have to re view it prior to the test, however there are plenty of resources that can assist you, from books to online tests.
The test in the theory section is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions, and you will need to complete them all correctly to pass. The questions cover a wide range of subjects such as road signs and the Highway Code. There is also a section on the rules for motorcyclists. There are many websites and apps that provide tests for practice, which are highly recommended.
Once you have completed your MTT After passing your MTT, you can schedule your practical test. The test is in two parts. The off-road section (Module 1) lasts about 20 minutes, and involves moving your motorcycle on its stand, parking it and performing manoeuvres around cones, such as U-turns or figures of eight. The on-road portion is a bit longer at around 40 minutes and you'll be required to take your motorcycle on roads with an examiner who will be checking your riding skills and your understanding of the rules of the road.
If you can pass both of the sections, your license will be upgraded to an A2 license. You can ride a motorbike with a capacity of 125cc and carry a passenger. This is the best option if you are looking to upgrade your licence early and gives you more freedom and you can upgrade to a larger bike straight away.
You can also take the MTT and follow a straight path to obtaining an A licence if you are over 24. You can ride any motorbike and transport passengers. This is not the best option for new riders as they will need to take the CBT and the theory test again. However, it could be your only option if you are looking to upgrade your bike.
Practical Test
For the practical test you will need to be accompanied by a licensed motorcycle instructor. During this period you will be performing various exercises while the instructor helps you get comfortable riding the motorcycle. They will also explain how the bike functions and what it offers. They will give you tips on how to ride safely and efficiently. You must be able use brakes with ease and control your speed. The test lasts for 40 minutes. You will be required to make normal and angle starts and also the hill start. You will be given a radio to listen for instructions from the examiner throughout your ride, which allows you to communicate with other riders.
After passing the exam after which you are able to apply for an A1 license. This allows you to drive a motorbike with a maximum power of 125cc. You can carry passengers with this licence if you want. You must have an A1 license for a minimum of two years before upgrading to full A license.
The A2 license permits you to drive motorcycles with a the maximum power rating of 35kW and a weight/power of no greater than 0.02 kW/kg. This licence is also applicable to three-wheeled motor vehicles like trikes.
To be eligible to get the A2 license, you must pass an exam on road traffic and pass a test in the practical. The test will comprise 20 questions, including 10 questions on road safety. You must answer them all correctly to pass the test. You must be 17 years old or older to take the test.
You also need to take a medical test and get a valid passport photograph to be able to obtain an A2 licence. If you already have an A1 license you can apply for A2 immediately. However, this route is more lengthy and requires more experience.
Some say that if you take the same tests every 2 years it's a waste of time and money to go from an A1, an A2 to a full licence. But if you only require small motorbikes for work, and you're not looking to take passengers, it might be worth it.
Full Motorcycle Licence
After passing both the Module 1 & 2 practical tests, you can upgrade to a full-A license. This allows you use motorcycles with a maximum power of 35kW (47Bhp). It also lets you remove your L plates and carry a passenger, as well as use motorways.
The path to an A2 license is similar to the process for an A license. Once you've completed a CBT and passed the test for theory then you can begin your training with your preferred course provider for the A2 practical exam. The modules for the A2 test are slightly different. Module 1 is a test of your riding abilities. The examiner will evaluate how you ride the bike, and on which roads you can ride it.
