Newborn Bedside Cot
A newborn bedside cot is a compact sleeper that allows new babies to share the same room as their parents, without the risks of true co-sleeping (which the AAP recommends against due to SIDS and suffocation). It also makes mid-night nursing sessions and care much easier.
This sleeper has an extremely firm mattress that can support babies backs, reducing the risk of SIDS. It can be swiveled on your adult bed to carry your baby to the top to cuddle them at sunrise or during nighttime nursing.
Budget
A bedside cot, also referred to as a co-sleeper, a bassinet-style baby cot that can be attached to your bed. This lets you comfortably and safely reach your newborn for middle-of-the-night feeding or comforting cuddles. They are a great option for new parents or mums recovering from a c-section as they provide an easy access to baby and do not require you to get up.
There are many different designs available, from the simple ones with a drop down side to more sophisticated ones that offer various adjustment options, such as the ability to tilt or raise. The majority of them can be converted into a separate crib for daytime naps or when your baby is about months old and sleeps longer at night.
Maxi-Cosi Lora is one of our favorites. It was nominated in the Best Cot category for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards. MFM home tester Emily commented how stylish and modern the design was. She also appreciated the fact that it can be used as a bassinet or clipped to your bed for safe side-byside sleeping. She also adored its soft mattress which has passed our tests for firmness and also that it comes with an adjustable manual inclining feature for reflux sufferers.
However, she didn't like the feature of a non-mesh panel on the lower end, and thought it was a bit bulky to move from room room frequently. When folded into a travel bag, she found it to be quite heavy to carry up the stairs.
Size
A bedside cot is essentially an upholstered bassinet that is fixed to the side of the bed. It allows you to reach your baby for mid-night feeding nappies, feeding and comforting. It's also great for mothers recovering from C-sections.
The NHS and Lullaby Trust recommend that you keep your baby away from you for the first six months, to decrease the chance of SIDS. The crib that is placed beside your bed with its low sides is a great option to achieve this. It allows you to be able to easily access your baby throughout the night.
It is essential that your baby sleeps on a firm, not an extremely soft mattress. A mattress that is soft can increase the risk of suffocation in infants as they do not have the motor control required to turn. The breathable fabric and skin-friendly materials make the mattress comfortable for your baby but also firm enough for safety.
Mum home test Jasmin liked that this crib does not take up much space in her bedroom. Also, she found it to be the perfect size for a newborn. She said the mattress was also of good quality, as opposed to those that feel cheap and thin. She also likes the fact that it has a storage area underneath for bedding and clothes which other bassinets don't have.
Mehack, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, is thrilled the ability to remove the wall on the side to allow for easier access to your baby. She also likes the fact that legs slide into the bed so it does not look bulky or take up too much floor space. She's also impressed with the ease of being able to move around the house whenever you'd like for ease during late-night meals and check-ins.
The CoZee Air crib is a favourite among parents. It won the Gold Award at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards. It is a clever design with four pulleys that can be used to raise or lower your crib. There's also an ample basket for toys, blankets, and other essentials. It's also light and easy to put together which makes it perfect to travel with your baby.
Safety
It is important to think about safety when choosing a newborn bedside crib. The official safe sleep guidelines from both the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends that babies not sleep in their parents' beds due to the dangers of overheating, suffocation and a higher chance of suffering from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Bedside bassinets enable parents to keep their newborns close, which allows for nighttime feedings as well as comforting and monitoring without the need to get out of bed.
This close proximity can also aid breastfeeding mothers since it allows them to attend to the needs of their baby while also sleeping. This can help to maintain the supply of milk and also encourage breastfeeding. Some cots for bedside have adjustable height options, which can ensure that the bassinet is an appropriate height for mother and baby for ease of access during feedings or for care.
Many bassinets are equipped with mattresses that are firm, which is designed to reduce the risk of suffocation and is in line with the standards of the industry. It is important to support the bones of a newborn because they are still squishy and aren't fully formed. The mattress should be covered with a fitted sheet to reduce the risk that dust mites, as well as other allergens, will suffocate a child. It must be kept clean and free of irritants.
Some cribs for bedside use can be tilted. This is beneficial for babies with reflux or digestive problems. But, it should be done slowly and with care. It is also essential to stay clear of adding pillows, duvets or crib bumpers to the bassinet as they could pose an obstructing risk to your baby and should only be used when the cot is set on a flat surface.
You should also think about a bassinet that has an attachment system that is secure. It can be connected to your bed without the need for tools. This feature is especially beneficial for parents who have difficulty get their child in and out of the crib or are worried about their baby accidentally falling asleep. If your bassinet has a secure attachment it is a good idea to check it regularly. Make sure there are no gaps and that the system is securely connected.
Comfort
If you're a parent-to-be, the comfort of your infant is undoubtedly one of your main concerns. There's a great sleep solution that allows you to keep your baby close to you throughout the night without taking on any of the risks that come with sharing beds. The newborn bedside cot is an essentially a bassinet-style crib which is fixed to the side of your bed that allows you to take them away for feeding at night and calming. bedside crib vs cot is an excellent option for mothers recovering from a C-section since it removes the need to stand or bend over.
Modern bedside cots for newborns should have a flat, firm mattress to encourage safe sleep habits and lower the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The bedding should be simple, comprising a cot sheets and a blanket tightly tucked on the bottom. Avoid toys, bumpers or pillows because they could be thrown over your baby and pose a risk of suffocation. If your baby has been used to being swaddled during a few weeks and you want to use an swaddle or baby sleep bag. However, it is recommended that this be removed after they are strong enough to unwrap them.
Some bedside cribs have an open or removable side that allows easy access to your newborn for middle-of-the-night feeds and comforting. This is a wonderful feature for parents looking to keep the bond between them and their child, while adhering to NHS safe sleep advice. However, if you're considering sleeping in the same bed as your child it's important to recognize that this practice has been associated with an increased risk of SIDS, particularly if a parent unintentionally rolls onto their child during sleep.
A fabric that breathes will keep your baby comfy and cool throughout the night. This is especially important if you plan to sleep with your baby because the risk of being overheated increases during sleep. The SnuzPod4 has an exclusive breathable side panel that aids in improving airflow, keeping your baby warm.
