At baseline, CTC-clusters were detected in 70% of EBC cases and in 20% of MBC patients (median number = 2, range 0-20, versus 0, range 0-15, p = 0.0015). Marker-independent approaches for CTC-cluster assessment improve detection and show that CTC-clusters are more frequent in EBC than in MBC patients, a novel finding suggesting that dissemination of CTC-clusters is an early event in BC natural history.Polytetrafluoroethylene emulsion was ultrasonically mixed with an extremely spinnable poly(acrylic acid-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) solution to get a dispersion with good spinnability, and the obtained dispersion was then wet-spun into water-swellable fiber. Crosslinking agents and iron species were simultaneously introduced into the water-swellable fiber through simple impregnation and water swelling. A composite fiber with Fenton reaction-catalyzing function was then fabricated by sequentially conducting crosslinking and sintering treatment. Due to crosslinking-induced good resistance to water swelling and PTFE component-induced hydrophobicity, the composite fiber showed a highly stable activity to catalyze H2O2 to oxidatively decolorize methylene blue (MB). Within nine cycles, the composite fiber could decolorize more than 90% of MB within one minute in the presence of H2O2 and did not show any attenuation in MB decolorization efficiency. The composite fiber still could reduce the total organic carbon of MB aqueous solution from 18.3 to 10.3 mg/L when used for the ninth time. Therefore, it is believable that the prepared fiber has good and broad application prospects in the field of dye wastewater treatment.Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae) is a typical cause of rice blast in agricultural production. Isobavachalcone (IBC), an active ingredient of Psoralea corylifolia L. extract, is an effective fungicide against rice blast. To determine the mechanism of IBC against M. oryzae, the effect of IBC on the metabolic pathway of M. oryzae was explored by transcriptome profiling. In M. oryzae, the expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 (PDHE1), part of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA cycle), was significantly decreased in response to treatment with IBC, which was verified by qPCR and testing of enzyme activity. To further elucidate the interactions between IBC and PDHE1, the 3D structure model of the PDHE1 from M. oryzae was established based on homology modeling. The model was utilized to analyze the molecular interactions through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation, revealing that IBC has π-π stacking interactions with residue TYR139 and undergoes hydrogen bonding with residue ASP217 of PDHE1. Crenolanib Additionally, the nonpolar residues PHE111, MET174, ILE 187, VAL188, and MET250 form strong hydrophobic interactions with IBC. The above results reveal that PDHE1 is a potential target for antifungal agents, which will be of great significance for guiding the design of new fungicides. This research clarified the mechanism of IBC against M. oryzae at the molecular level, which will underpin further studies of the inhibitory mechanism of flavonoids and the discovery of new targets. It also provides theoretical guidance for the field application of IBC.The photopic negative response (PhNR) is a negative component of the photopic flash electroretinogram that follows the b-wave and is thought to arise from the retinal ganglion cells. Reduction in its amplitude in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) has been previously documented using formal electroretinography. This study explored the use of a handheld device (RETeval, LKC technologies, Gaithersburg, MD, USA) in 72 IIH patients of varying stages and severity (and seven controls) and investigated associations between PhNR parameters and disease severity. PhNR amplitudes at 72 ms (P72) and p-ratio (ratio to b-wave peak value) differed significantly across groups, with a trend towards smaller amplitudes in those with severe IIH, defined as papilloedema with Modified Frisén Scale (MFS) ≥ 3, retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) ≥ 150 μm or atrophic papilloedema (p = 0.0048 and p = 0.018 for P72 and p-ratio, respectively). PhNR parameters did not correlate with MFS, RNFL thickness, standard automated perimetry mean deviation or macular ganglion cell layer volume. This study suggests that PhNR measurement using a handheld device is feasible and could potentially augment the assessment of disease severity in IIH. The clinical utility of PhNR monitoring in IIH patients requires further investigation. When humans infer underlying probabilities from stochastic observations, they exhibit biases and variability that cannot be explained on the basis of sound, Bayesian manipulations of probability. This is especially salient when beliefs are updated as a function of sequential observations. We introduce a theoretical framework in which biases and variability emerge from a trade-off between Bayesian inference and the cognitive cost of carrying out probabilistic computations. We consider two forms of the cost a precision cost and an unpredictability cost; these penalize beliefs that are less entropic and less deterministic, respectively. We apply our framework to the case of a Bernoulli variable the bias of a coin is inferred from a sequence of coin flips. Theoretical predictions are qualitatively different depending on the form of the cost. A precision cost induces overestimation of small probabilities, on average, and a limited memory of past observations, and, consequently, a fluctuating bias. An unpredictability cost induces underestimation of small probabilities and a fixed bias that remains appreciable even for nearly unbiased observations. The case of a fair (equiprobable) coin, however, is singular, with non-trivial and slow fluctuations in the inferred bias. The proposed framework of costly Bayesian inference illustrates the richness of a 'resource-rational' (or 'bounded-rational') picture of seemingly irrational human cognition.Recent studies have illuminated the rheological behavior of synovial fluid and the role of protein and hyaluronan (HA). However, with respect to artificial joint replacement in standardized wear simulations, bovine serum is used as fluid test medium. Little is known about the rheological characteristics of bovine serum, which are needed for precise tribological investigations. The steady shear viscosity η of bovine calf serum is determined for protein concentrations used in standardized wear simulations depending on shear rate γ˙ and temperature T. Additionally, the density of the serum is determined for both protein concentrations. The results show shear thinning behavior of bovine calf serum with a nearly Newtonian behavior in the range of high shear rates. Within the range of high shear rates, mean viscosities of η = 0.82-0.88 mPa·s were found for protein concentrations of 20 g/L and mean viscosities of η = 0.88-0.94 mPa·s for 30 g/L, decreasing with temperature. Densities of 1.004-1.005 g/cm3 and 1.007-1.
