Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs look similar to a bassinet and are attached to the sides of a bed. They often have one side that can be lowered down to make it easier to reach and some even have an incline that's ideal for babies with reflux.
MFM test subject Georgina said that this crib was simple to put together, and the instructions were extremely simple. It was a fast build. It also folds down to the size of a small bag and comes with a convenient bag for traveling.
Easy to put together
Bedside cribs are generally easy to set up, and are on the smaller side so they are able to be placed neatly beside your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina who was one of the MFM's home testers said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to assemble, with clear instructions and simple zips." The crib can be used as a portable travel cot and comes with a convenient bag. best bedside cot for newborn Cots For Tots comes with multiple mesh openings for ventilation and its height adjustable allows it to fit on any mattress.
Some cribs with a bedside have the option of a side panel that could be raised, allowing easy access to your baby without having to step out of your own bed. This is a great choice for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who want to be close to their infant throughout the night but don't wish to take on the risk of co-sleeping.
Most models have a built-in rocking function. This can be extremely comforting for your baby and help them fall asleep. Some cribs can recline in a position that can be useful if your baby has reflux or colic. It is best to use them under supervision, and a GP or health visitor is recommended prior to attempting this position.
A lot of bedside cribs have a canopy over them to shield your child from light or sound, which can be helpful in keeping them peaceful. Some cribs have an area for storage underneath that is perfect for storing extra blankets, diapers and other clothes for your child.
Many cribs for bedside use can be converted into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a key selling feature for a lot of families. The Joie Roomie is the winner of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards is a fantastic example. It has removable side panels and a conversion kit and a tummy-tilt, making it ideal for travel. It comes with five different height adjustments that can be adjusted to your bed. The MFM home testers loved it for being comfortable and easy to put together. It is also compact. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is another favorite and was shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfy
A bedside crib allows you to monitor your baby from the comfort of your own bed. It's an excellent option for moms who are recovering from a C section as you can easily lift your infant towards you to feed their needs at night or change their nappies with no need to get out of bed. The most comfortable cribs have mesh sides that let you view your baby's face through.
Some cribs lower the barrier completely, offering the convenience of co-sleeping without the risk (check that the crib you choose is compliant with the latest safety standards however). Some cribs allow you to lower the barrier, but pop it up again after you have lifted baby out. This is a good option for parents concerned about their child rolling off their mattress.
The Luah is the winner of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket - is designed to attach to bedsteads as well as divan beds, but it does require straps that are longer than some other models (check the specs to be sure your bed can accommodate). The spacious design comes with an opening side panel, a patented perforated bottom that creates air cushioning to increase air flow. There's also an integrated set-up for reflux as well as the ability to swivel 360 degrees, allowing you to rotate the crib according to the position your baby prefers.

It's also super-easy to assemble - Georgina, who took part in our MFM tests assembled it quickly and didn't even need to read the instructions. It's also a fantastic travel cot. It folds flat and can be easily stuffed into a bag.
The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger size but is still compact and easy to attach to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to put together however she was disappointed that the instructions could have been clearer regarding the zips.
Easy to clean
Look for cribs with removable mattress covers that can be washed in the machine while looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will help keep it clean from leaky nappies, sick babies and spills. It's important to choose a product that is easily disassembled and dismantled in parts, so that you can access all the nooks and crannies to conduct an extensive cleaning and sanitising session.
This is crucial, since it's the best way to be sure that all dirt and germs have been eliminated. It is also important to ensure that the crib's sides are securely attached, so there aren't any gaps or spaces in which your child could slide down or become trapped.
It is also important to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and that it's a good fit with your bed. This is especially crucial in the case of a co-sleeping bedside crib. They are designed to be attached securely to the side of the bed for parents and allow parents to easily access their baby throughout the night to feed or comfort their child while ensuring the safety of separate sleeping areas.
Another thing to think about when choosing a bedside crib is whether it has any extra features you might find useful. For instance, some cribs have the ability to rock (useful for sleepers who are fussy) or tilt - but keep in mind that you should use this feature with care because it could be dangerous if your child is thrown out.
You'll also want to ensure that your crib or travel cot has a firm and flat mattress that fits snugly in the frame. This will reduce the risk of SIDS by ensuring that your baby's head and feet don't slide down into any gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's also an excellent idea to purchase a new mattress for your cot, crib or travel bed instead of using one that has been handed down from someone else or purchased second-hand. Used mattresses are more prone to lose their shape over time, increasing the risk for SIDS. All cribs new to market must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard, which introduces more stringent requirements to ensure the safety of your sleep and provide effective solutions.
Multi-faceted
A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib, as they're sometimes known) is attached to your bed to allow you to easily reach your baby at night without having to get out of your bed to sleep. They can also be used as a separate crib during the day. They usually have a side panel that can be moved down so you can feel and see your baby. Some cribs let you put the side panel down at night. This lets you be close and convenient with your baby, while minimising the risk of sharing a bed. Some cribs will also convert into a travel cot or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, be sure to speak to your GP regarding this) or changing into an older baby cot or playpen.
The SnuzPod 4 is a consistently popular crib and it's not only about its sleek Scandi aesthetic. This crib has six height settings as well as a useful shelf for storage. It's also heavier and bulkier than the other comfortable cribs that we've tested and comes with a handy bag to keep it clean and free of dust in storage.
It's easy to assemble, with clear instructions and a handy toolkit to help you. It is also easy to clean with an easy-to-clean mattress cover and breathable fabric. It also comes with a few additional features compared to other cribs, including an anti-reflux angle as well as a rocking feature and a storage compartment.
Jasmin says that this crib is great because it's "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night for a peaceful feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, so it will last for a longer time before my son gets older". She also likes the ease of clean and that it feels sturdy and well made. It's designed to fit on a divan bed which makes it a great option for those with little space. Plus, it has an easy-to-carry bag that you can take along when travelling. A perfect all-rounder.
