Hearing loss is the fifth leading cause of disability in the world. Coffee consumption might have a beneficial effect on hearing function because of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of some of its compounds. However, no previous longitudinal study has assessed the association between coffee consumption and the risk of hearing impairment.

To assess the prospective association between coffee consumption and risk of disabling hearing impairment in middle and older men and women from the UK Biobank study.

Analytical cohort with 36,923 participants (16,142 men and 20,781 women) [mean (SD) 56.6 (7.8) years, 1.6 (1.4) cups/d, and-7.6 (1.3) dB for age, total coffee consumption and speech reception threshold in noise at baseline, respectively]. At baseline, coffee consumption was measured with 3-5 multiple-pass 24-h food records. Hearing function was measured with a digit triplet test, and disabling hearing impairment was defined as a speech reception threshold in noise>-3.5dB in any physical on was associated with lower risk of disabling hearing impairment in men but not in women. The association appeared to be independent of the coffee type and the preparation method.
Following ankle sprains, some patients complain of their ankles "giving way," characterized by functional instability with no positive findings in traditional stress tests. The calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) may contribute to the stabilization of the subtalar and talocrural joints, and some functional instability may be due to CFL insufficiency. We aimed to clarify and quantitatively assess CFL insufficiency with three-dimensional stress computer tomography (CT) using the Pronation-External Rotation Stress Test (PERST).

Ten patients who tested positive under PERST and underwent an isolated CFL reconstruction were included. Using a custom-made loading jig, we used the Supination-Internal Rotation Stress Test (SIRST) and PERST to assess the function of anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and CFL, respectively. 3D-CT in neutral position was used as a baseline, and we quantified the distance between the origin and insertion of the CFL and ATFL at 2 years pre- and postoperatively.

Postoperative scores improherefore, measuring the distance between the origin and insertion of the CFL could provide the means to quantify the instability of the subtalar joint.
Hidden blood loss (HBL) unrecognized by the usual practice of assessing intraoperative loss and postoperative drainage comprises a considerable proportion of total blood loss (TBL) during primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, HBL has not been adequately investigated in hybrid TKA (uncemented femur, cemented tibia). The purpose of this study was to clarify the amount and influential factors of HBL in hybrid TKA.

A consecutive series of 151 knees in 137 patients with knee osteoarthritis who underwent hybrid TKA were retrospectively evaluated. Mitomycin C research buy We examined the correlations between HBL and various factors of concern for their effects on TBL, including age, sex, body weight (BW), body height, body mass index, operation time, tourniquet time, and visible blood loss (VBL) in three periods (intraoperative VBL
; until 3h postoperatively VBL
; from 3h to 1 day postoperatively VBL
).

Median (interquartile range) HBL and TBL were 528 (388, 711) mL and 725 (582, 926) mL, respectively. HBL relative to TBL (H/T) was 73%. There were weak correlations between HBL and BW (r=0.249, p=0.002) and between HBL and VBL
(r=-0.261, p=0.001). Multivariate analyses confirmed a positive correlation between HBL and BW (β=0.296, p<0.001) and a negative correlation between HBL and VBL
(β=-0.270, p<0.001).

Hybrid TKA showed comparable values of HBL and H/T to those reported for cemented TKA. Therefore, management strategies for HBL in hybrid TKA can follow the same protocols used for cemented TKA. High BW and low VBL
may be predictors of postoperative HBL in hybrid TKA.

Twenty male Wistar rats, eight weeks old, weighing approximately 140-190 g, were divided into four experimental groups (n = 5) as follows I control-tap water; II NaF 150 ppm; III NaF 150 ppm and Se 1.5 mg/L; IV Se 1.5 mg/L, and had available water with solutions ad libitum for 28 days. DNA damage detected by comet assay was confirmed in the liver, spleen, and brain cells, but not in blood. Selenium supplementation together with NaF decreased DNA damage in liver and spleen cells. According to the histological findings, no changes were observed in spleen and brain tissues after NaF administration. Unlike the observed Se protective effect on the DNA level, no significant reduction of liver tissue injury was observed after the NaF and Se treatment, resulting in mild inflammation. Data of this study suggest that DNA damage after NaF subacute exposure at moderately high concentration was reduced in liver and spleen cells due to Se supplementation, but a similar change was not seen in the brain.
To summarise and synthesise findings from qualitative primary research studies of nursing students' experiences from educational activities using manikins to gain a deeper understanding of the role these manikins play in the students' learning.

A systematic review and thematic metasynthesis were conducted. Cinahl+, Ovid Medline, ERIC and Embase were searched systematically.

Sandelowski and Barroso's framework guided the review process. A comprehensive search to identify qualitative studies of nursing students' experiences from learning with manikins was performed in January 2019 and updated in April 2020. Study selection was guided by six screening questions derived from these inclusion criteria qualitative primary studies, published from 2008, in English or Scandinavian, presenting findings of undergraduate nursing students' experiences with manikins at all fidelity levels. Thomas and Harden's method for thematic synthesis was followed.

Twenty-eight articles of twenty-seven studies were included. We identified three synthesised analytic themes Seeing the manikin as a doll or a patient, Experiencing yourself as a nurse caring for a patient, and Being a team member.
