Propositions:
Proposition of Fact - Sunscreen causes coral bleaching.
Proposition of Value - Sunscreen is bad for our oceans.
Proposition of Policy- We should ban the use of certain types of sunscreen at beaches.
Evidence: I would need to find some scientific research or studies to prove that the chemicals in sunscreen is detrimental to coral reefs. I should also find evidence on how much sunscreen is sold every year. I still want people to use sunscreen, so I need evidence/proof of types of ingredients that are harmful to coral and those that are not harmful.
#2 Topic: Bears in Yosemite
Propositions:
Proposition of Fact: Visitors are responsible for the bear attacks in Yosemite Valley.
Proposition of Value: Bears in Yosemite Valley are dangerous to humans.
Proposition of Policy: We should relocate the bears of Yosemite Valley to other locations in CA.
Evidence: I would need to show examples of visitors who's behavior has caused bears to lose their fear of humans. I would need statistics about the bear attacks that have occurred throughout the past few decades. I would have to prove that relocating bears can survive in their new environments.
Topic #3: West Nile Virus
Propositions:
Proposition of Fact: West Nile Virus is spreading in the United States.
Proposition of Value: West Nile Virus is the worst disease.
Proposition of Policy: We should begin a state-wide spraying campaign in CA to get rid of West Nile Virus.
Evidence: I need statistics to show the growth rate of West Nile Virus in the United States. I need doctor's or scientist's testimony saying how bad West Nile Virus is. I need proof that a pesticide campaign would actually work. I could use testimony of somebody who suffers from it to talk about how devastating it is.
My first choice: I am currently leaning towards relocating the bears in Yosemite Valley. I really like the idea of banning harmful sunscreen, but I think finding evidence to support that claim would be hard and I think the bear topic would be easier to research. Either way, I'm supporting wildlife and that's my passion. It would be a policy proposition and I will try to get my audience to sign a petition.
