Most patients with SARS-CoV-2 and HIV co-infection exhibited mild to moderate symptoms. The milder extent of inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection might be associated with a previous history of ART in HIV-infected patients.

The incidence of Japanese encephalitis (JE) has markedly decreased after the national immunization program in Korea, but still reported intermittently in adults. Prospective studies are required to determine whether JE virus (JEV)-neutralizing antibody (NAb) levels decline with age after the final JE vaccination. In this study, we evaluated the titers of NAbs against JEV in Korean adolescents and adults.

Specimens were collected from normal, healthy individuals aged 1 to >70 years (a total of 1,605 cases) from five regional hospitals in Korea. Neutralizing antibody (NAb) titers were determined using a pseudotyped JEV NAb assay.

The JEV NAb-positive population was >95% in the 15-29 year age group, 89.42% in the 30-44 year age group, 75.24% in the 55-59 years age group, and 59.77% in the ≥70 year age group. NAb titers from the 20 to 70 year age groups showed a progressive decrease in proportion to age (P < 0.0001).

The retention of NAbs after the final JE vaccination in childhood is a key indicator of the vaccination program and will have a significant impact on future JE prevention strategies.

We investigated whether companion drug resistance was associated with adverse outcomes of the shorter multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment regimen in Bangladesh after adjustment for fluoroquinolone resistance.

MDR-TB/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis patients registered for treatment with a standardized gatifloxacin-based shorter MDR-TB treatment regimen were selected for the study. Drug resistance was determined by the proportion method, gatifloxacin and isoniazid minimum inhibitory concentration testing for selected isolates, and whole-genome sequencing.

Low-level fluoroquinolone resistance and high-level fluoroquinolone resistance were the most important predictors of adverse outcomes, with pyrazinamide resistance having a significant yet lower impact. In patients with fluoroquinolone-/second-line-injectable-susceptible tuberculosis, non-eligibility for the shorter MDR-TB treatment regimen (initial resistance to pyrazinamide, ethionamide, or ethambutol) was not associated with adverse namycin resistance.Bats have populated earth for approximately 52 million years, serving as natural reservoirs for a variety of viruses through the course of evolution. Transmission of highly pathogenic viruses from bats has been suspected or linked to a spectrum of potential emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals worldwide. Tacrolimus mouse Examples of such viruses include Marburg, Ebolavirus, Nipah, Hendra, Influenza A, Dengue, Equine Encephalitis viruses, Lyssaviruses, Madariaga and Coronaviruses, involving the now pandemic Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Herein, we provide a narrative review focused in selected emerging viral infectious diseases that have been reported from bats. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has introduced the medical community to a lung disease heretofore unknown to most clinicians. In much of the discourse about COVID-19 lung disease, the more familiar clinical entity of ARDS has been used as the guiding paradigm. Reflecting on studies in ARDS, particularly that due to influenza, and on data from the SARS-CoV and MERS epidemics, many authorities, including within the discipline of infectious diseases, were initially passionate in their opposition to the use of corticosteroids for lung involvement in COVID-19. The voice of the pulmonology community-the community of lung experts-has continued to be among the quietest in this conversation. Herein we offer our perspective as academic pulmonologists who encountered COVID-19 in its first United States epicenter of New York City. We encourage a conceptual separation between early COVID-19 lung involvement and ARDS. We draw on history with other immune cell-mediated lung diseases, on insights from the SARS-CoV experience, and on frontline observations in an attempt to allay the skepticism towards corticosteroids in COVID-19 lung disease that is likely to persist even as favorable study results emerge.
The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the HIV-1 reservoir and the levels of immune activation in chronic patients under fully suppressive cART.

We quantified the HIV proviral DNA and 2-LTR circles loads from PBMCs, the levels of CD38+ and Ki-67+ T-cells, and the levels of IL-7 in a cohort of patients with more than 5 years of ART at enrollment and after 1 year.

In 29 participants with a median of 8 years (IQR, 6.9-9.4) under suppressive cART we found higher levels of CD8+ CD38+ T-cells after 1-year (P = .000). There was a non-statistically significant poor correlation between the levels of immune activation and the proviral DNA of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells. Ki-67+ T-cells declined without significant differences, and there was no significant correlation with the proportion of CD38+. IL-7 decreased at the follow-up observation (P = .094), but there was no correlation with the levels of CD38+ and Ki-67+ T-cells.

We found a weak but non-statistically significant correlation of the levels of T-cell activation with the proviral DNA and 2-LTR circles. This suggests the likely occurrence of further mechanisms driving chronic versus early immune activation other than viral replication by itself in chronic patients.
