Colorectal cancer is a very common malignant tumor worldwide. The clinical manifestations of advanced colorectal cancer include the changes in bowel habits, hematochezia, diarrhea, local abdominal pain and other symptoms. However, the colorectal cancer with an initial symptom of cervical lymph node enlargement is extremely rare. In this article, we report a case of rectal cancer presenting with cervical lymph nodes enlargement as the initial symptom.
A 57-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for cervical lymph node enlargement which was accidentally detected during physical examination. Computed tomography scan revealed multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Cervical ultrasound showed normal thyroid gland and multiple left supraclavicular lymph nodes enlargement. The patient underwent lymph nodes biopsy and pathologic results showed metastatic adenocarcinoma. The subsequent lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a mucosal bulge lesion located at rectus and biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent rectal cancer resection. She is alive with no evidence of recurrence or new tumors 2years after surgery.
Cervical lymph node metastasis is a rare metastatic way in colorectal cancer. This is the first case of rectal cancer presenting with cervical lymph nodes metastases as the initial symptom. Surgical resection combined with postoperative chemotherapy improved long-term prognosis of the patient. This rare metastatic way of rectal cancer should be paid attention for clinicians.

Current high-throughput technologies-i.e. whole genome sequencing, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, etc.-generate huge amounts of data and their usage gets more widespread with each passing year. Complex analysis pipelines involving several computationally-intensive steps have to be applied on an increasing number of samples. Workflow management systems allow parallelization and a more efficient usage of computational power. Nevertheless, this mostly happens by assigning the available cores to a single or few samples' pipeline at a time. We refer to this approach as naive parallel strategy (NPS). Here, we discuss an alternative approach, which we refer to as concurrent execution strategy (CES), which equally distributes the available processors across every sample's pipeline.
Theoretically, we show that the CES results, under loose conditions, in a substantial speedup, with an ideal gain range spanning from 1 to the number of samples. Also, we observe that the CES yields even faster executions since parallelly computabhis to be feasible, a benchmarking of the tools included in the pipeline would be necessary. It is our opinion these benchmarks should be consistently performed by the tools' developers. Finally, these results suggest that concurrent strategies might also lead to energy and cost savings by making feasible the usage of low power machine clusters.
Although Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the common pathogens in children with pertussis and viral coinfection, the clinical impact of RSV infection on pertussis remains unclear. We compared clinical characteristics and sought differences between infants with single Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) infection and those with RSV coinfection.
We enrolled 80 patients with pertussis who were hospitalized in Shenzhen Children's Hospital from January 2017 to December 2019. Respiratory tract samples were tested for B. pertussis with real-time polymerase chain reaction and respiratory viruses with immunofluorescence assay. Clinical data were obtained from hospital records and collected using a structured questionnaire.
Thirty-seven of 80 patients had B. pertussis infection alone (pertussis group) and 43 had RSV-pertussis coinfection (coinfection group). No significant differences were found with regard to sex, body weight, preterm birth history, pertussis vaccination, symptoms, presence of pneumonRSV infection should be suspected when wheezes are present on auscultation of the chest in these patients. Early detection of RSV may avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a serious disease with high mortality rate. Activation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 production and signalling is considered the corner stone in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. find more EMT plays a central role in development of fibrosis in many organs including the lungs. Activated platelets are an important source of TGF-β1 and play a pivotal role in EMT and fibrosis process. The antiplatelet, ticagrelor was previously found to inhibit the EMT in different types of cancer cells, but its ability to serve as an anti-pulmonary fibrosis (PF) agent was not previously investigated.
In this study, we aim to investigate the potential ability of ticagrelor to ameliorate bleomycin-induced fibrosis in rats.
PF was induced in rats by intratracheal BLM at a dose of 3 mg/kg. The effect of daily daily 20 mg/kg oral ticagrelor on different histological and biochemical parameters of fibrosis was investigated.
Our results revealed that ticagrelor can alleviate lung fibrosis. We found that ticagrelor inhibited TGF-β1 production and suppressed Smad3 activation and signaling pathway with subsequent inhibition of Slug and Snail. In addition, ticagrelor antagonized PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway signaling. Moreover, ticagrelor inhibited the EMT that revealed by its ability to up-regulate the epithelial markers as E-cadherin (E-cad) and to decrease the expression of the mesenchymal markers as vimentin (VIM) and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA).
Our results suggest that the P2Y12 inhibitor, ticagrelor may have a therapeutic potential in reducing the progression of PF.
