Racial and geographical disparities exist in HIV infections in the USA. The highest burden of HIV diagnoses remains among Black/African American persons and is concentrated in the Southern region. This paper describes within-race changes in HIV diagnoses among heterosexually active Black/African American persons in seven states with the highest rates/100,000 population of HIV diagnoses in the South, during 2014-2018. The total number of diagnoses among Black males and females with infection attributed to heterosexual contact decreased in 2018 compared to 2014. Diagnoses decreased among Black males and females in Louisiana and among Black females in Texas. While the declines indicate progress, Black males and females in the South remain disproportionately affected by HIV. Results support a need for the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based HIV prevention interventions and strategies for heterosexually active persons in jurisdictions that have not seen decreases in HIV diagnoses.Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with variants in amyloid precursor protein (APP) and presenilin (PSEN) 1 and 2. It is increasingly recognized that patients with AD experience undiagnosed focal seizures. These AD patients with reported seizures may have worsened disease trajectory. Seizures in epilepsy can also lead to cognitive deficits, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. Epilepsy is roughly three times more common in individuals aged 65 and older. Due to the numerous available antiseizure drugs (ASDs), treatment of seizures has been proposed to reduce the burden of AD. More work is needed to establish the functional impact of seizures in AD to determine whether ASDs could be a rational therapeutic strategy. The efficacy of ASDs in aged animals is not routinely studied, despite the fact that the elderly represents the fastest growing demographic with epilepsy. This leaves a particular gap in understanding the discrete pathophysiological overlap between hyperexcitability and aging, and AD more specifically. Most of our preclinical knowledge of hyperexcitability in AD has come from mouse models that overexpress APP. While these studies have been invaluable, other drivers underlie AD, e.g. PSEN2. CNQX A diversity of animal models should be more frequently integrated into the study of hyperexcitability in AD, which could be particularly beneficial to identify novel therapies. Specifically, AD-associated risk genes, in particular PSENs, altogether represent underexplored contributors to hyperexcitability. This review assesses the available studies of ASDs administration in clinical AD populations and preclinical studies with AD-associated models and offers a perspective on the opportunities for further therapeutic innovation.Baruch Kanner and this author have had parallel careers investigating neurotransmitter transporters. At multiple times during their careers, they have found themselves collaborating or competing, but always learning from each other. This commentary elaborates on the interactions between the Kanner and Rudnick laboratories, with a focus on transporters in the Neurotransmitter Sodium Symporter (NSS) family of amino acid and amine transporters. A key focus of these interactions is the mechanism by which chloride ions activate and drive transport.Somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2) expression has previously been documented in olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB). Here, we fully characterize SSTR2 expression in ONB and correlate staining results with clinicopathologic parameters including Hyams grade. We also assess SSTR2 immunohistochemistry expression in various histologic mimics of ONB to assess its diagnostic functionality. 78 ONBs (51 primary biopsies/excisions and 27 recurrences/metastases) from 58 patients were stained for SSTR2. H-scores based on intensity (0-3 +) and percentage of tumor cells staining were assigned to all cases. 51 histologic mimics were stained and scored in an identical fashion. 77/78 (99%) ONB cases demonstrated SSTR2 staining (mean H-score 189, range 0-290). There were no significant differences in staining between primary tumors and recurrences/metastases (mean H-score 185 vs 198). Primary low-grade ONB had somewhat stronger staining than high-grade tumors (mean H-score 200 vs 174). SSTR2 expression had no prognostic value when considering disease-free or disease-specific survival. SSTR2 staining is significantly higher in ONB than its histologic mimics (mean H-score 189 vs 12.9, p less then 0.001) suggesting a potential use of the marker in diagnosis of ONB. In conclusion, SSTR2 is consistently expressed in ONB suggesting a role for somatostatin-analog based imaging and therapy in this disease. More generally, SSTR2 may be another marker of neuroendocrine differentiation in ONB.Cognitive reappraisal is associated with reduced emotional distress; however, little is known about the nature of this relationship in autism. This study tested whether autistic traits moderate reappraisal success (i.e., the negative correlation between reappraisal use and emotional symptom severity). Emotional symptoms were assessed using measures of depression, anxiety, and stress. It was hypothesized that more severe autistic traits would be associated with weaker reappraisal success across all scales. Data were collected from 377 adults using an on-line survey. Structural equation models found moderation effects for depression and anxiety, but not stress. Contrary to hypotheses, more severe autistic traits were associated with stronger reappraisal success. These preliminary results support including reappraisal in emotion regulation treatments for individuals with autistic traits.We explored different aspects of buffalo spermatozoa during cryopreservation. India led the percent (%) research ladder with 34.4, followed by Pakistan (29.5), Egypt (12.3), Iran (7.7), Italy (5.6), Indonesia (3.2), China (2.1), Brazil (1.4), Thailand (1.1), Philippines and Bulgaria (0.7 each), Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Vietnam, and USA (0.4 each). Among four categories of studies, Group-1 evaluated only supplements/additives/media in the freezing semen extender (n = 191/285; 67.02%); Group-2 conducted in vivo fertilization (n = 62/285; 21.75%) and Group-3 conducted in vitro fertilization/ cleavage rate/penetration rate/ blastocyst yields (n = 28/285; 9.82%) with their specific cryodiluents/media, respectively.
