How to Choose the Best Hob
When selecting the ideal hob to buy, there are many factors to consider. From price to energy efficiency. Decide what features are most important.
A basic ceramic electric stove costs less than PS100. However you'll need to pay more for a model with numerous features. Gas hobs are a popular choice, and offer great temperature control, but they're also more expensive.
1. Haier I-Flex Induction Hob
This Haier hob has four cooking zones and three 'Push&Go" functions, and will aid in cooking quick meals. It was one of the fastest boiling water hobs in our tests, taking only four minutes. It has a child lock and an pause feature, so you can stop the process swiftly without having to mess with controls.
Its design is sleek and modern it blends seamlessly with modern kitchens. It's typically made of glass (shatterproof and heatproof) or ceramic, and comes with controls that are flush with the worktop for ease of use.
The controls are intuitive to use and we liked the clear display that tells the current power setting, and which of the five zones is active. The 'Boost' feature produces high-powered heat for just a short period of time, and is perfect for stir-frying or bringing pots of water to the boil quickly. Safety features such as the hob light that is hot or automatic shut-off are also useful.
However it's not as sensitive to touch as other hobs in this test. It took nine presses to reach the maximum temperature, in comparison to seven or six for other models. It takes longer to respond when you alter the cooking temperature, meaning you may have to change settings several times before your pan is at the right temperature.
This 60 cm model comes with four cooking zones including a half-flex area where two zones can be joined to accommodate larger pans and pots. Dual-ring design permits it to operate at both "normal" and "boost" power levels. Boost is ideal for frying meat, searing it or bringing pots of water to the rapid boiling point.
It is fully connected through the hOn App, and offers 100's of recipes, guides for cooking, and 30 unique programmes divided into different food categories and types of cooking. It features a multislider controls panel with a 'lockable interface' and can detect the type pan you are using to set the proper cooking mode. It also works with hOn pans made by third party companies and has several safety features like a lockable panel and boil-dry prevention.
2. Smeg I-Flex Induction Hob
When you're doing work in your kitchen, or looking for an alternative to gas induction hobs, induction hobs are becoming more popular. Prices have dropped drastically in the last few years. Basic four-zone models can be found for less that PS100. However, if you're looking for all the bells and whistles that come with induction, it's worth paying extra to get the latest technology.
This sleek model from Smeg features the latest induction technology that makes cooking more efficient and convenient. The revolutionary Auto-pot detection technology automatically detects the position of pots with a minimum diameter of 9cm, allowing you to switch on the appropriate zone without having to manually select it.
Smeg's emphasis on energy efficiency doesn't overlook flexibility either - this hob is designed to conserve power by altering the maximum operating temperature of the zones to suit your cooking preferences. There are Read A great deal more to save energy by using the Eco-Logic advance mode that reduces the power output from 11.1 kW to as little as 2.4 kW.
The user-friendly interface of this cooker impressed testers, thanks to its easy-to-use sliding controls that follow your pan's edge the edge of it. The control panel's color-coded layout allows you to easily identify the state of each zone. The "Flexi Duo" feature lets the connection of two zones to accommodate larger pans. There are a variety of useful functions including four automatic cooking presets: melting boiling, slow-cooking, and keeping warm.
Additionally, the hob has a 'FlameSensor' that warns you when there is a risk of fire or burnt-on food. There are other safety features, like an indicator of residual heat and an automatic shut-off when the surface is too hot.

In our tests, it swiftly heated up a pan after we placed it on the Booster Zone, and pasta water that was boiling. However, it took an extended time to cool off after it was turned off from the hob. Our test participants were unable to pinpoint the exact temperature on the control panel.
As well as having a Dual Zone and Push&Go feature, this Indesit hob has a useful bridge function that lets you connect two cooking zones to suit larger pans. It also has a child lock and an overheating block and an auto shut-off feature that shuts down the hob when it's overheated. Our test participants were impressed that there were no visible flames or flammable substances and the glass was easy to wipe clean. Ventilated hobs in contrast to traditional extractors draw steam and smoke from the pan and out of the room by an air duct that is located on the surface. The vent on this hob was easy to clean, however it required two people in order to take the filter out.
4. GE Induction Hob
When choosing a new hob think about how it will fit to your kitchen's design and layout, in addition to your cooking style and life. Induction hobs are an excellent choice if you cook with kids or elderly in mind. They are equipped with safety features such as automatic shut-offs and a cool-to-touch surface. For those who prefer efficiency and speed, an electric stove with a wipe-clean ceramic glass fascia is a great choice. For those who live in areas prone to load-shedding, the capability to use gas hobs during power outages could make the difference in favor of a gas model.
