This perspective represents a major shift in our thinking away from direct effects of isoprene, for example, by changing membrane properties or quenching ROS, to indirect effects, through changes in gene expression and protein abundances. Acute appendicitis is one of the most common reasons for emergency medical consultation. While simple appendicitis can be treated with antibiotics or surgery, complex appendicitis including gangrene, abscess, and perforation requires appendectomy. During the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, an overall drop in emergency room consultations was observed. We therefore aimed to investigate the incidence and treatment strategies of acute appendicitis during that period.

Data of insurance holders with the ICD code for "acute appendicitis" or OPS procedure of appendectomy of a major health insurance company in Germany were analyzed retrospectively. Groups were built, containing of the means of March-June of 2017, 2018, and 2019, defined as "pre-COVID group" with the "COVID group," defined as data from March to June of 2020. Data was analyzed by age, sex, comorbidities, length of hospital stay, diagnoses, and treatment. Data of the COVID group was analyzed for simultaneous COVID-19 infection.

The relevance of pancreatic texture for pancreatic fistula (POPF) formation after distal pancreatectomy (DP) remains ill defined. Recent POPF definition adjustments and common subjective pancreatic texture assessment are further drawbacks in the investigation of pancreatic texture as a factor for POPF development after DP.

The predictive value of pancreatic texture by histologic assessment was investigated for POPF formation after DP, respecting the updated 2016 fistula definition. Histologic evaluation at the resection margin included amount of steatosis, degree of fibrosis, and pancreatic duct size.

A total of 102 patients who underwent DP were included. Thirty-six patients developed POPF. There was no difference in histologic variables in patients with and without POPF. In the univariate analysis, none of the three histologic features showed significant correlation with POPF formation. The ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve demonstrated poor utility for the grade of steatosis 0.481 ± 0.058 (p= 0.75) and grade of fibrosis 0.466 ± 0.058 (p= 0.57) as predictive factors for POPF formation.

Results indicate that pancreatic texture does not predict POPF formation following DP. This is particularly relevant in the context of the increasing use of robotic and laparoscopic approaches for DPs with limited clinical pancreatic texture assessment by palpation.

We have previously shown that wild-derived MBT/Pas mice are highly susceptible to RVF virus and that part of this phenotype is controlled by a locus located on distal Chromosome 11. Using congenic strains, we narrowed down the critical interval to a 530 kb region containing five protein-coding genes among which Rnf213 emerged as a potential candidate. We generated Rnf213-deficient mice by CRISPR/CAS9 on the C57BL/6 J background and showed that they were significantly more susceptible to RVF than control mice, with an average survival time post-infection reduced from 7 to 4 days. The human RNF213 gene had been associated with the cerebrovascular Moyamoya disease (MMD or MYMY) but the inactivation of this gene in the mouse resulted only in mild anomalies of the neovascularization. This study provides the first evidence that the Rnf213 gene may also impact the resistance to infectious diseases such as RVF.

Overall, 53 patients underwent this operation in the Plastic and Cosmetic Department of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital from January 1, 2013, to June 30, 2017, with a mean follow-up of 38 ± 16 months. The pre-operation and post-operation SN-N lines (the distance from the sternal notch to the nipple) were 21.8 ± 1.2 cm and 20.7 ± 1.0 cm, respectively; the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The patients and surgeon expressed satisfaction with the procedure.
