priester verlevendigt het
Bijbelverhaal met rituele gebaren,
hij knielt bijvoorbeeld of heft zijn
armen. Bepaalde vieringen hebben
meer specifieke spelelementen:
op Goede Vrijdag wordt het
kruisbeeld van het altaar
verwijderd en onder een doek
begraven, en op paaszondag wordt
het kruis weer terug in de kerk
geplaatst, als symbool van de
verrijzenis (de opstanding).
Het doel hiervan is de Bijbelse
verhalen na te doen in theatrale
vorm. Gelovigen kunnen zo met
eigen ogen zien hoe belangrijk en
indrukwekkend deze
gebeurtenissen zijn.
Op het schilderij van de Gregoriusmis zie
je een aantal van die elementen
terug. De priesters knielen, de
middelste priester heft zijn armen,
de gelovigen op de achtergrond
kijken naar de religieuze
handelingen. Bovenaan zie je twee
engelen: zij houden de gordijnen
open, alsof ze de toeschouwer op
deze manier deelgenoot van het
toneeldrama willen maken.
