This study investigated the thickness-dependent permeation properties of laser-sintered (LS) polymers as required to design and produce components with a special barrier performance to gaseous substances. Helium and oxygen permeation experiments were carried out on quenched and standard LS polyamide 12 (PA12) sheets generated with two, four, six, and eight layers at a constant powder layer thickness of 100 µm. The structural properties of the sheets were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, light microscopy, and X-ray micro-computed tomography. A reduction in thickness resulted in higher diffusion coefficients for both types of LS sheets. An explanation could be the large volume fraction of poorly sintered powder particles adhering to the surfaces and incomplete melting and low consolidation of the polymer at small thicknesses. The thickness-dependency of the solubility coefficients was the opposite, especially for the standard LS sheets, which might be related to the larger pore volume in thicker sheets. As both effects compensated for each other, nearly constant permeation coefficients for all thicknesses were observed. The results provide further insights into different material characteristics of thin LS PA12 structures and offer new information on factors relevant to their solution and diffusion behavior.Rural community-based medical education (CBME) enriches undergraduate and postgraduate students' learning but has been impacted by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We identified the challenges faced by stakeholders as well as the relevant solutions to provide recommendations for sustainable CBME in community hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 31 pages of field and reflection notes were collated through direct observation and used for analysis. Five physicians, eight nurses, one clerk, fourteen medical trainees, and three rural citizens were interviewed between 1 April and 30 September 2020. The interviews were recorded and their contents were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Three themes emerged uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, an overwhelming sense of social fear and pressure within and outside communities, and motivation and determination to continue providing CBME. Rural CBME was impacted by not only the fear of infection but also social fear and pressure within and outside communities. Constant assessment of the risks associated with the pandemic and the implications for CMBE is essential to ensure the sustainability of CBME in rural settings, not only for medical educators and students but also stakeholders who administrate rural CBME.Sugammadex provides a rapid pharmacological reversal of aminosteroid, as well as fewer pulmonary complications, a better physiological recovery, and shorter stays in the postanesthetic recovery unit (PACU). This retrospective analysis of our Centricity anesthesia database in 2017-2019 assessed the efficiency of sugammadex in real-life situations in two groups of surgical cancer patients (breast and abdominal surgery) based on the extubation time, operating room exit time, and length of PACU stay. Overall, 382 anesthesia records (131 breast and 251 abdominal surgeries) were extracted for the pharmacological reversal of neuromuscular blockades by neostigmine or sugammadex. Sugammadex was used for reversal in 91 breast and 204 abdominal surgeries. Sugammadex use did not affect the extubation time, operating room exit time, or length of PACU stay. However, the time to reach a 90% train of four (TOF) recovery was significantly faster in sugammadex patients 2 min (1.5-8) in breast surgery and 2 min (1.5-7) in abdominal surgery versus 10 (6-20) and 9 min (5-20), respectively, for neostigmine (p less then 0.05). Most patients who were reversed with sugammadex (91%) reached a TOF ratio of at least 90%, while 54% of neostigmine patients had a 90% TOF ratio recorded (p less then 0.05). Factors other than pharmacological reversal probably influence the extubation time, operating room exit time, or PACU stay; however, sugammadex reliably shortened the time so as to reach a 90% TOF ratio with a better level of reversal.Labeling of food allergens in accordance with legal regulations is important to protect the health of allergic consumers. The requirements for detecting allergens in foods involve adequate specificity and sensitivity to identify very small amounts of the target allergens in complex food matrices and processed foods. In this work, one hundred commercial samples were analyzed for walnut detection using three different methods a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit based on polyclonal antibodies, a direct ELISA using a recombinant multimeric scFv, and a real time PCR. The most sensitive method was real time PCR followed by sandwich ELISA kit and multimeric scFv ELISA. There was agreement between the three methods for walnut detection in commercial products, except for some heat-treated samples or those that contained pecan. Our previous RNA-seq studies showed that microRNA-27b-3p (miR-27b-3p) might play an important role in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of chicken primary myoblasts (CPMs). However, the mechanism of miR-27b-3p regulating the proliferation and differentiation of CPMs is still unclear. In this study, the results showed that miR-27b-3p significantly promoted the proliferation of CPMs and inhibited the differentiation of CPMs. Then, myostatin (MSTN) was confirmed to be the target gene of miR-27b-3p by double luciferase reporter assay, RT-qPCR, and Western blot. By overexpressing and interfering with MSTN expression in CPMs, the results showed that overexpression of MSTN significantly inhibited the proliferation and differentiation of CPMs. In contrast, interference of MSTN expression had the opposite effect. This study showed that miR-27b-3p could promote the proliferation of CPMs by targeting MSTN.
