The study suggests a novel FaHSP17.8-CII-PSII-ROS module to understand the mechanisms of Cd detoxification and tolerance, which provides a new strategy to improve phytoremediation efficiency in Cd-stressed grasses.Coronavirus Diseases 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has a huge impact on the plastic waste management in many countries due to the sudden surge of medical waste which has led to a global waste management crisis. Improper management of plastic waste may lead to various negative impacts on the environment, animals, and human health. However, adopting proper waste management and the right technologies, looking in a different perception of the current crisis would be an opportunity. About 40% of the plastic waste ended up in landfill, 25% incinerated, 16% recycled and the remaining 19% are leaked into the environment. The increase of plastic wastes and demand of plastic markets serve as a good economic indicator for investor and government initiative to invest in technologies that converts plastic waste into value-added product such as fuel and construction materials. This will close the loop of the life cycle of plastic waste by achieving a sustainable circular economy. This review paper will provide insight of the state of plastic waste before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The treatment pathway of plastic waste such as sterilisation technology, incineration, and alternative technologies available in converting plastic waste into value-added product were reviewed.Although drinking water disinfection proved to be an effective strategy to eliminate many pathogens, bacteria can still show disinfection tolerance in drinking water distribution systems. To date, the molecular mechanisms on how environmental stress affects the tolerance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to monochloramine are not well understood. Here, we investigated how three stress conditions, namely starvation, low temperature, and starvation combined with low temperature, affected the monochloramine tolerance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen commonly found in drinking water distribution systems. All stress conditions significantly promoted monochloramine tolerance, among which starvation had the most drastic effects. Proteomic analyses suggested that the three conditions not only triggered a positive antioxidant defense against oxidative damages but also prepared the bacteria to employ a passive defense mechanism against disinfectants via dormancy. Moreover, the expression of antioxidant enzymes reached the maximum under the starvation condition and further low temperature treatment had little effect on bacterial response to oxidative stress. Instead, we found further treatment of the starved cells with low temperature decreased the osmotic stress response and the stringent response, which generally play pivotal roles in disinfection tolerance. Taken together, these findings shed light on how abiotic factors influence the bacterial disinfection tolerance and will aid design of efficient strategies to eliminate Pseudomonas aeruginosa from drinking water. This work offers a novel pathway to prepare cryptomelane manganese oxides nanosheets as an superior catalyst for the catalytic combustion of oxygenated volatile organic compounds. The tunnel cryptomelane manganese oxides nanosheets were prepared from layered birnessite via simultaneously tuning pH and molar ratio (ROK) of the redox-precipitation between oxalic acid and KMnO4. Thus, few-layered cryptomelane nanosheets possessing the most predominantly exposed (211) facet are generated at low pH (5.2-5.6), which intensifies the surface area of thin crystal cryptomelane nanosheets up to 177 m2g-1 and weakens Mn-O bonds. Moreover, high ROK results in low manganese average oxidation state (AOS), greater oxygen vacancies and better low-temperature reduction and oxygen mobility. Compound19inhibitor Such features significantly maneuver the catalytic activity of the cryptomelane nanosheets catalysts for the complete oxidation of oxygenated volatile organic compound (e.g., 2-propanol, acetone) at low temperature (170-230 °C). Moreover, the catalysts show high stability for 48 h. The presented catalyst discloses an avenue to address current obstacles in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds. The ultra-selective extraction of thorium ions (Th(IV)) from lanthanides is of significance to both solve the radioactive pollution issue in rare earth (RE) production and sustainably provide thorium fuel for the liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTR). However, it remains a great challenge. Here, we reported an oxygen-rich microporous carbon for ultra-selective extraction of Th(IV) from rare earth elements (REEs) in a wide pH range. This selectivity was derived from the synergy of the oxygen-rich nature, microporous structure of the carbons, the chemical valence, and the ionic size of Th(IV) species. This oxygen-rich microporous carbon presented an ultra-high distribution coefficient (Kd) of 1.15 × 108 mL g-1 for Th(IV) at pH 4.9 in the presence of 15 REEs and revealed outstanding performance for Th(IV) extraction from three simulated RE solutions with high ionic strength of lanthanides. Meanwhile, an exceptional adsorption capacity of 624.98 mg g-1 was obtained in the single Th(IV) solution. Both values were superior to those of reported adsorbents. More importantly, the new adsorbent developed here could be prepared from cigarette butts. These features ensured the oxygen-rich carbon as a promising and cost-effective adsorbent for high-purity thorium extraction from REEs.To understand the potential of urea-synthesized g-C3N4 nanosheets (0.125-1 mg/mL) as antimicrobial agents against oomycetes, an investigation of the interaction mechanism between g-C3N4 nanosheets and Phytophthora capsici was conducted. Transcription analysis showed that after being exposed to g-C3N4 nanosheets for 1 h, P. capsici triggered a sharp upregulation of antioxidant activities and structural constituents and a downregulation of metabolic pathways, including ATP generation, autophagy disruption, membrane system disorders and other complex adaptive processes. All the life stages of P. capsici, including mycelial growth, sporangium formation, zoospore numbers and zoospore germination were remarkably inhibited and even injured. A mutual mechanism is proposed in this work ROS stress upon exposure to visible irradiation and, combined with their sharp nanosheet structure, cause perturbations of the cell membrane and induce damage to the ultrastructure of mycelial growth, sporangium and zoospores. Given that the antimicrobial action of g-C3N4 nanosheets were derived from the damage throughout the duration of treatment and was not limited to a single target, these complex mechanisms could favor the avoidance of drug resistance and benefit other oomycetes management.
