An owl birdhouse provides a great opportunity to watch these nocturnal predators up close. They’re amazing hunters and good for the garden, too – they feed on insects and small mammals that might otherwise harm the birds you love to attract with feeders. And, a bonus – owl pellets are pest control and Halloween decorations all rolled into one. Owls regurgitate the undigestible parts of the animals they kill, and you can learn a lot about what your neighbors are eating by reading the contents of their pellets.
While the sight of an owl hunting and perching in a tree may be exciting, it is important to keep your distance. As wild animals, owls are naturally aggressive around their young and will defend their territory, often attacking or flushing anything that approaches. In one case, a female Great Gray Owl chased a fully-grown Black Bear away from her young. Even if you’re only seeing a pair of owls on their nightly rounds, it is best to keep your distance from them.
A properly designed owl nest box will have an opening that is large enough for adult owls to enter but small enough to deter squirrels, mice, and other potential invaders. For example, a 3.5-inch square opening will work for most barn owls but can be enlarged for screech or other small owl species.
To help you decide what size of nest box to build, check in with your local university extension service or Audubon society for recommendations on what owls will be native to your area and what kind of box will best suit them. You can also order a pre-built owl box from some of the companies that make them.
Owls like wood, especially fir and cedar. A sturdily built nest box will last for years. Avoid pine and cypress because they can be more difficult to maintain. Use wood stock that is rough-cut on both sides for better grip on the inside and outside of the box. If you don’t have access to wood, a metal nest box will serve just as well. Just be giá tổ yến thô to add drainage holes in the floor and roof if you’re using a metal nesting box.
When you’re ready to install your owl nest box, choose a site that’s at least 12 feet high and away from prevailing winds. It should also be located in a clearing with open space to provide a safe place for the owls to fly low and hunt for their prey. You should also hang the box away from mid-day sun, which can cause a glare and deter owls from flying to hunt.
When mounting the owl nest box, be sure it’s securely fastened to the tree or post. Most experts recommend using corrosion resistant screws fitted to pre-drilled countersunk pilot holes. A couple handfuls of dried leaves or pine shavings can be stuffed into the box as bedding if you want to provide an extra layer of soft, dry substrate. Otherwise, owls can easily create their own bedding from regurgitated tidbits of their dinners, so there’s really no need to add any additional material.
