The prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among children and adolescents in the Gaza Strip increased after the recent wars. The aims of the study are To investigate the prevalence and nature of war traumatic events and PTSD; and to investigate how these traumatic events predict PTSD when taking into account demographic and socioeconomic status factors amongst Palestinian children and adolescents in the Gaza Strip. Methods The sample consists of 1,029 school pupils (11-17 years old) 533 (51.8%) were female and 496 (48.2%) were male. War-Traumatic Events Checklist (W-TECh) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders Symptoms Scale (PTSDSS) were used. Results The majority of children and adolescents experienced personal trauma (N 909; 88.4%), witnessed trauma to others (N 861; 83.7%) and observed demolition o psychological symptoms and to enhance their resilience. To investigate the role of each channel type in response to mechanical unloading, two transgenic mouse models overexpressing dominant-negative Cx43 predominantly in osteocytes driven by a 10 kb dentin matrix protein 1 (Dmp1) promoter were generated. The R76W mutation resulted in gap junction inhibition and enhancement of hemichannels, whereas the Δ130-136 mutation inhibited both gap junctions and hemichannels. Both mutations led to cortical bone loss with increased endocortical osteoclast activity during unloading. Increased periosteal osteoclasts with decreased apoptotic osteocytes were observed only in R76W mice. These findings indicated that inhibiting osteocytic Cx43 channels promotes bone loss induced by unloading, mainly in the cortical area; moreover, hemichannels protect osteocytes against apoptosis and promote periosteal bone remodeling, whereas gap junctions modulate endocortical osteoclast activity in response to unloading. Different SERCA isoforms have been described (SERCA1, 2, and 3) with SERCA2 playing a pivotal role in Ca2+ homeostasis in cardiovascular tissues. In the heart, SERCA2a is the dominant isoform and has been proposed as therapeutic target in patients with heart failure. In the vasculature, both SERCA2a and SERCA2b are expressed with SERCA2b being the predominant isoform. The physiological role of SERCA2a in the vasculature, however, remains incompletely understood. Toyocamycin cell line In the present study, we used gene-modified mice in which the alternative splicing of the SERCA2-encoding gene (Atp2a2), underlying the expression of SERCA2a, is prevented and SERCA2a is replaced by SERCA2b. The resulting SERCA2b/b mice provide a unique opportunity to investigate the specific contribution of SERCA2a versus SERCA2b to vascular physioloreement with the reported difference in intracellular localization of SERCA2a versus SERCA2b. Finally, EC-mediated relaxation by acetylcholine and ATP was assessed. Concentration-response-curves for ATP showed a higher sensitivity of aortic segments of SERCA2b/b mice, while no difference in potency between strains were observed for acetylcholine. In summary, despite the relative low expression of SERCA2a in the murine aorta, our results point toward a distinct role in vascular physiology. Abnormal appearance of Paneth cells has been widely documented in non-intestinal tissues within the digestive tract and even observed in non-gastrointestinal organs. Although metaplastic Paneth cells are part of the overarching pathology of intestinal metaplasia (IM), only a fraction of intestinal metaplastic lesions contain Paneth cells. We survey literature documenting metaplastic Paneth cells to gain insights into mechanism underlying their etiologic development as well as their potential relevance to human health. A synthesized view from this study suggests that the emergence of metaplastic Paneth cells at extra-intestinal mucosal sites likely represents a protective, anti-bacterial, and inflammatory response evoked by an altered microbial activity. However, it is currently unclear whether and how bouts of activity and rest are regulated within the 24-h cycle (i.e., over ultradian time scales). Therefore, we used passive infrared sensors to measure temporal behavior in mice housed under either a light-dark (LD) cycle or continuous darkness (DD). We found that a probabilistic Markov model captures the ultradian changes in the behavioral state over a 24-h cycle. In this model, the animal's behavioral state in the next time interval is determined solely by the animal's current behavioral state and by the "toss" of a proverbial "biased coin." We found that the bias of this "coin" is regulated by light input and by the phase of the clock. Moreover, the bias of this "coin" for an animal is related to the average length of rest and activity bouts in that animal. In LD conditions, the average length of rest bouts was greater during the day compared to during the night, whereas the average length of activity bouts was greater during the night compared to during the day.
