Bird and Nest - A Closer Look
Birds are omnipresent in our world—even in the most urban areas, we see them flying by overhead or perched on the porch, patio or car. But a peek at their life in the nest gives a better sense of the magic they bring to our lives.

A bird’s nest is where egg-laying, incubation and care for young take place. The structure protects the eggs and nestlings from inclement weather, wind and predators. Depending on species, birds build or condition nests from natural materials, such as grasses, twigs, sticks, bark strips, fur, feathers and moss, or human-made items such as yarn, paper, plastic and string. A nest may be a simple depression on the ground, the knot-hole left by a broken branch, a hole drilled in a tree, a twig nest stacked on one another, an elaborate hanging dome or even a burrow in a cliff face or beneath a fallen log.

Many species conceal their nests to prevent predation and also employ countermeasures to deter inquiline (non-avian) predators from noticing the location of the nest. gia công yến hũ nha trang that nest on water’s edge or in trees often place the nest under leaves or within branches to provide protection and camouflage. Other species, such as grebes, will cover their nests with leaves or other plant matter to hide them from observers. Nest predators include raccoons, squirrels and rodents, as well as blue jays, magpies, crows, herring gulls and starlings.

Nest building is typically a shared activity, with both male and female birds contributing to construction. Some birds do not make a nest at all, instead depositing eggs in a scrape on the ground or laying them in a hollow of a branch or tree trunk. Nest design varies by taxonomic group; however, most members of a family build nests with similar styles.

Some nests are built with grass stems and twigs; others, such as those of blackbirds and thrushes, are cup-shaped. Other types of nests are shaped like upside-down bowls, have a flat bottom or a ring shape; and still others are made of twigs woven together or built around an existing cavity. Some nests incorporate mud, lichen, fur or hair, or a mix of twigs and saliva.

The component materials used to build a nest can have a significant impact on how the structure handles rain. For example, a nest built with moss tends to be very slow to dry; while a nest of twigs dries very quickly.

Providing nesting materials and habitat is a great way to help native wildlife and enhance the beauty of your landscape. A few tips for adding potential nesting materials to your yard include laying down piles of leaves and twigs or draping them over bushes and trellises, hanging a wire-mesh suet cage with a lid open to push in materials, and placing twigs and pine needles on the ground or tucked into crevices of trees. Also consider offering a small puddle of water that can be used to make mud for those species that like to build with it.
