Best Medication For ADHD
Most teenagers and children who are taking ADHD medication report that they focus better and are less impulsive. They also feel more calm and are able to get on with their schoolwork. Some suffer a slight slowdown in growth and may have an increased heart rate or blood pressure when taking these drugs.
Medications are available in different forms including tablets, capsules liquid, patches and tablets (such as Daytrana). Adderall (methylphenidate) is the most well-known stimulant. It is available in three forms: immediate release, extended-release and sustained-release.
Stimulants
Stimulants are a type of drugs that is effective in treating ADHD. These drugs improve focus and attention by affecting neurotransmitters, particularly norepinephrine as well as dopamine. These are the chemicals that regulate the brain's pre-frontal cortex which is often described as the brain's "secretary" because it assists with organizing and planning abilities.
Stimulants come in short and long-acting doses. The short-acting medicines have a peak effect in 30 to 45 minutes, and must be taken two or three times a day. Amphetamines like Adderall and Dexedrine and methylphenidates such as Ritalin, Concerta and Ritalin are among these. Amphetamines are more potent and last longer, however they all work in similarly in improving concentration and attention. Certain stimulant medicines are available in extended-release forms. adhd depression medication can be a better option because they last 8 to 12 hours and are usually taken daily. Certain of these medicines are powders that you mix with liquids to make drinks, while others are pills.
Finding the right medication can take a bit of time. Your doctor will watch how you react to different types of drugs and adjust the dosage as needed. The use of medicines should be part of a complete treatment plan that includes support and behavioral therapy.
Non-stimulant ADHD medication takes a bit longer to begin working however they can make you feel more in control and improve your ability to concentrate, impulsivity and focus. These medications don't affect dopamine and norepinephrine the same as stimulants do, and therefore can be more secure to use for an extended period of time. They can also be less prone to negative effects, including constipation, heartburn, and lessened sexual drive. Strattera is the first of these drugs that was approved by FDA to treat ADHD. It's an inhibitor of selective reuptake. Your doctor could prescribe additional medication from this category, including guanfacine (Intuniv) and clonidine (Kapvay).
There are also non-stimulant antidepressants that are prescribed off-label to treat ADHD. These antidepressants with tricyclic chemistry, such as Tofranil(imipramine) are prescribed to treat ADHD. These medications are only prescribed by doctors if stimulants or other non-stimulants do not work or cause too many adverse side effects.
Viloxazine or atomoxetine can be prescribed by your doctor. These medicines do not have a direct effect, but help reduce the tendency to be impulsive and improve concentration over time. These medications belong to a different class of drugs compared to other ones and may cause side effects like shaky hand or headache. Your doctor may also recommend the low dose antidepressant bupropion (Wellbutrin), that isn't FDA approved for ADHD treatment but can increase concentration and reduce the impulsivity. It may cause some uncomfortable but usually not severe, side effects, like hearing ringing, or changes in vision.
