Our results, extracted from instrumented nanoindentation experiments in a liquid environment using five pig hearts, revealed variations in elasticity according to the local orientation of the myocardial tissue. In addition, applying the Finite Element Method (FEM) in our model based on transverse isotropy and local tissue orientation proved able to accurately simulate the passive filling of a left ventricle (LV) in a representative 3D geometry. Our model enables improved understanding of the underlying mechanical properties of the LV wall and can serve as a guide for designing and manufacturing biomedical material better adapted to the local epicardial tissue.
There has been a great many technical difficulties in measuring the bond strengths between brittle dental substrates and materials, especially in preparing specimens. This study evaluated the validity of the relatively easy flexural bond strength (FBS) test in measuring bond strength of resin cement to zirconia as an alternative to the cumbersome tensile bond strength (TBS) and micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) tests.

The FBS and TBS of resin cement to zirconia were measured experimentally after three surface treatments on a zirconia ceramic air abrasion only (A), conditioning with Single Bond Universal (U) after air abrasion, and conditioning with Z-Prime Plus (Z) after air abrasion. The data were investigated using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Weibull statistics, and a theoretical simulation.

In both the FBS and TBS tests, the experimental data were consistent and quantitatively similar. First, according to ANOVA, the U group showed the highest bond strengths in both tests, followed by the Z group and the A group. In each surface treatment group, the FBS was always higher than the TBS. Second, the Weibull fitting showed the same order of strength in both tests (A < Z < U) and in all surface treatment groups (FBS > TBS). Third, the theoretical ratios calculated from the Weibull moduli agreed well with the experimental ratios of the FBS to the TBS.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the utilization of healthcare services; however, the impact on population-level emergency department (ED) utilization patterns for the treatment of acute injuries has not been fully characterized.

This study examined the frequency of North Carolina (NC) EDs visits for selected injury mechanisms during the first eleven months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data were obtained from the NC Disease Event Tracking and Epidemiologic Collection Tool (NC DETECT), NC's legislatively mandated statewide syndromic surveillance system for the years 2019 and 2020. Frequencies of January - November 2020 NC ED visits were compared to frequencies of 2019 visits for selected injury mechanisms, classified according to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) injury diagnosis and mechanism codes.

In 2020, the total number of injury-related visits declined by 19.5% (N = 651,158) as compared to 2019 (N = 809,095). Visits related to motor vehicle traffic crashes declined by a greater percentage (29%) and falls (19%) declined by a comparable percentage to total injury-related visits. Visits related to assault (15%) and self-harm (10%) declined by smaller percentages. Medication/drug overdose visits increased (10%), the only injury mechanism studied to increase during this period.

Both ED avoidance and decreased exposures may have contributed to these declines, creating implications for injury morbidity and mortality. Injury outcomes exacerbated by the pandemic should be addressed by timely public health responses.

This study aimed to determine the association between sarcopenic findings of the psoas muscle and mortality in patients with sepsis; further, it aimed to assess its clinical utility, in addition to the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, in predicting mortality.

This retrospective single-center cohort study included adult patients with sepsis, who were admitted to the intensive care unit, between January 2012 and December 2018. The cross-sectional area of the psoas muscle at the L3 level was measured using computed tomography (CT) images, following which the subjects were categorized as "Above middle," "Middle," and "Sarcopenic." The association between sarcopenic findings and 90-day mortality was investigated by logistic regression analysis. A "modified SOFA score," by adding sarcopenic findings to the SOFA score, was developed and evaluated for its predictive performance.

Here, 255 patients with sepsis, who were admitted to the intensive care unit (median age, 76 [64-84] years; SOFA score, 9 [5-14]), were included. The adjusted odds ratio for the "Middle" and "Sarcopenic" groups for 90-day mortality was 2.40 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.93-6.15) and 3.67 (95% CI 1.39-9.68), respectively. The c-statistics of the SOFA and modified SOFA score was 0.731 [95% CI 0.650-0.799] and 0.749 [95% CI 0.673-0.813]. On decision curve analysis, a little additional net benefit was observed on using the modified SOFA score.

The objective of this study was to determine the gender distribution of chairpersons and board members of emergency medicine societies worldwide.

In this cross-sectional analysis, websites of national emergency medicine societies worldwide were screened for the composition of executive boards and the respective chairpersons. find more The gender of the board members and chairpersons was obtained either by the profile on the respective web site and/or by internet search and gender identification software. Descriptive statistics were performed and results for national societies were stratified by continent.

A total of 61 boards of national emergency medicine societies were analyzed. Detailed information on the board composition was available for 50 societies, of which 27 were from Europe, 10 from Asia, five from Africa, four from North America, three from South America and one from Australasia.
