The present study investigated the association between the mode of tumor recurrence and prognosis in 123 patients with clinical stage II/III rectal cancer. In the past 10 years, patients received systemic chemotherapy following radical (R0, with no macroscopic residual tumor lesions) resection using total or tumor-specific mesorectal excision. Patients with rectosigmoid cancer and T4 + chemoradiation therapy were excluded from the present study. Among relapses, remote metastases were observed in 17/123 patients (13.8%) The lung in 8 patients (6.5%), the liver in 5 patients (4.1%) and elsewhere in 4 patients (3.3%). A total of 11 patients (8.9%) had pelvic local recurrence as the first relapse, which was located anterior to the sacrum in 7 patients (5.7%), at the anastomosis site in 2 patients (1.6%), and in the inner pelvis in 2 patients (1.6%). Among relapsed patients, the 5Y-OS was 69.3% in those with distant metastases and 27.3% in those with local relapse (P=0.02; no significant differences in patient demographics). The results indicated that advanced rectal cancer and control of pelvic local recurrence are manageable by R0 resection and postoperative chemotherapy. However, for patients whose initial relapse was pelvic local recurrence, the relapsed tumor initiated a new metastatic cascade to organs, such as the lung and liver, and affected prognosis.The present study retrospectively reviewed the treatment courses and results of patients with follicular thyroid tumors, including carcinomas. In the 5 year study period from April 2015 to March 2020, 797 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and 128 patients with follicular tumors (FTs) received surgery or treatment for distant metastases and recurrence at the Kanagawa Cancer Center (Japan). Of these patients, 73 that were diagnosed with follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) were included in the present study. An algorithm used for the application of treatment strategies was assessed. The aim of the present study was to examine patients with FT or FTC who were treated at the Kanagawa Cancer Center to devise appropriate treatment strategies and to evaluate the various treatment outcomes of FTC. Pre-diagnostic serum thyroglobulin and thyroid stimulating hormone levels, follow-up and overall survival (OS) were investigated in the present study. The results revealed that OS was significantly increased in patients with minimally invasive follicular thyroid cancer (MIFTC) compared with widely invasive follicular thyroid cancer (WIFTC) (log-rank test, P=0.017). Additionally, OS was significantly higher in patients without distant metastasis at the first consultation compared with those initially diagnosed with distant metastasis (log-rank test, P=0.023). Although all patients without distant metastasis at the first consultation and those with MIFTC are alive, the 10-year survival rates were 75.3% for patients with WIFTC and 75.6% for those with distant metastasis at the first consultation. The results of the present study suggested that the prognosis of WIFTC was the worst among patients with FTC and distant metastasis, and that total thyroidectomy surgery and radioactive iodine treatment are essential. Additionally, if the disease progresses, prompt inclusion of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy is necessary.MicroRNA (miRNA or miR) is stably present in plasma. It has been reported that miRNA could be used for detecting cancer. Circulating miRNAs are being increasingly recognized as powerful biomarkers in a number of different pathologies, including in breast cancer. The aim of the current study was to establish and validate miRNA sets that are useful for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Specifically, the current study intended to determine whether miRNA biomarkers were tumor-specific and to statistically verify whether circulating miRNA analysis could be used for breast cancer diagnosis. In the present study, a total of nine candidate miRNA biomarkers were selected by examining reference miRNAs associated with the generation and progression of breast cancer to identify novel miRNAs that could be used to detect early breast cancer. A total of 226 plasma samples from patients with breast cancer were used. In addition, 146 plasma healthy samples were used as non-cancer controls. These samples were divided into tations of mammography when used as an auxiliary diagnosis of mammography.Regorafenib is an oral multi-kinase inhibitor which targets tumor angiogenesis, the tumor microenvironment and oncogenesis. Based on this mode of action, regorafenib has a broad spectrum of toxicities. However, at present, few reports have focused on autoimmune adverse events. We report a first case of regorafenib-induced exacerbation of chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura in remission during treatment for the patients with heavily treated advanced colorectal cancer. This case report highlights the need for caution with regard to regorafenib treatment in patients with cancer with concomitant immune thrombocytopenic purpura.Endometrial cancer is the most prevalent gynecological cancer in developed countries. Although the prognosis of endometrial cancer is better than that of other gynecological cancers, the prognosis of advanced endometrial cancer is still poor and thus new therapeutic modalities, such as immune therapies, are urgently required. For the further development of new modalities, exploration of new biomarkers is important. The present study investigated the circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) integrity as a ratio of the necrotic tumor cell-derived long cfDNA fragments to the total dead cell-derived short cfDNA fragments from genomic Alu elements in patients with advanced endometrial cancer during peptide vaccination treatment. The results demonstrated that i) The plasma cfDNA integrity was decreased during the first cycle of vaccination in patients with endometrial cancer treated with the personalized peptide vaccination, and ii) the post-vaccination cfDNA integrity levels were correlated with good prognosis. Some of these findings have been confirmed in other cancers, and thus cfDNA integrity might be an important marker for future cancer vaccine therapies in general, and might also be applicable for other immune therapies.
