Best Medication For ADHD
The majority of children and teens who take ADHD medication report that they focus better and are less impulsive. They feel calmer and more focused with their school work. Some suffer a slight slowing in growth and could be experiencing an increase in blood pressure or heart rate when taking these drugs.
There are a variety of medicines, including tablets, liquids, patches, and capsules (such as Daytrana). The most commonly used stimulant is methylphenidate (Adderall). It is available in three forms: immediate-release, extended-release, and sustained-release.
Stimulants
Stimulants are a type of drugs that are effective in treating ADHD. These medications help improve focus and attention by affecting certain neurotransmitters within the brain, including dopamine and norepinephrine. These chemicals regulate the prefrontal cortex, which is sometimes referred to by the term "secretary of the brain" because it assists in organizing and planning skills.
Stimulants are available in short- and long-acting doses. The short-acting drugs peak within 30 to 45 minutes and need to be taken two or three times a throughout the day. Amphetamines, such as Adderall and Dexedrine and methylphenidates, such as Ritalin, Concerta and Ritalin, are among these. Amphetamines may be a bit more powerful and last longer than methylphenidates, however they work in the same way to improve attention and focus. There are extended-release versions of some stimulant medications. They are a better option because they last between 8 to 12 hours, and are generally taken only every day. Certain of these medicines are powders that you mix with liquids to make drinks, while others are pills.
It may take a while to find the right medication for you or your child. Your doctor will watch how you respond to the different types of medications and will adjust the dosage if needed. The use of medications should be done as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which should include behavioral therapy and support services.
Non-stimulant ADHD medications take a little longer to kick in, but can make you feel more in control and increase your concentration, impulsivity and focus. These medications don't alter dopamine or norepinephrine in the way that stimulants do, which means they can be safer to use over an extended period of time. These medications can also have less adverse effects such as constipation, heartburn, and decreased sexual drive. Strattera is the first medication that was approved by the FDA to treat ADHD. It's an inhibitor of selective reuptake. adhd treatment without medication could prescribe additional medication from this category which include guanfacine (Intuniv) and clonidine (Kapvay).
Off-label, non-stimulant antidepressants can also be prescribed to treat ADHD. These are older medications within the tricyclic antidepressant family, such as Tofranil (imipramine). These drugs are only prescribed by doctors if stimulants or other non-stimulants don't work, or if they cause too many adverse side effects.
Your doctor can also prescribe atomoxetine (Prozac) or viloxazine (Risperdal). These drugs don't have an immediate impact however they can reduce the amount of impulsivity that occurs over time and increase concentration. They're in a distinct drug category than the other options and may cause some side effects such as headaches or shaky hands. Your doctor might also recommend taking a low dose of an antidepressant known as bupropion (Wellbutrin) that is not a FDA-approved treatment for ADHD but works well to increase concentration and reduce the impulsivity. It can cause some unpleasant but usually not serious side effects like hearing loss or changes in vision.
