y, the quality of life survey results were found to be higher in the active group and the group with a high SCORAD index compared with the remission group and the group with a low SCORAD index. Based on this finding, we can conclude that quality of life is negatively affected by high disease activity.
Obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia have been shown as risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study, the association between lipid and lipoprotein metabolism abnormalities and the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was investigated in patients with obesity.
In this study, the clinical, laboratory and imaging findings of 357 children and adolescent patients (199 girls and 158 boys) aged 2-18 years who were diagnosed as having obesity between 2013 and 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical and laboratory features of the patients who were diagnosed as having non-alcoholic fatty liver disease using ultrasonography were compared with patients who did not have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. All lipid and lipoprotein levels were defined as hypo-, normo- and hyperlipidemic in comparison with the reference values according to age and sex.
The frequency of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was 44.5% in the entire study group and was higher in males (p<0elopment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Non-alcoholic liver disease and lipid metabolism disorders are common in children and adolescents with obesity. The frequency of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in hypolipidemic, normolipidemic, and hyperlipidemic patients was not different. This finding indicated that the increase in the amount of body fatty tissue and insulin resistance were more important risk factors in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Umbilical venous catheters are frequently used in the neonatal period. The incidence of umbilical venous catheter-related thrombosis is between 1.3% and 43% in ultrasound scans. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk of portal vein thrombosis in patients who were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and underwent umbilical venous catheter insertion.
Premature infants (≤32 gestational weeks) who were hospitalized in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and underwent umbilical vein catheter placement between 2016 and 2018, were included in the study. The demographic data, clinical risk factors for thrombosis, number of catheter days, catheter locations, times of detection of thrombosis using Doppler ultrasonography, treatment methods and durations, thrombosis follow-up and examinations were obtained retrospectively from the electronic patient files.
Ninety-six patients whose complete data could be reached were enrolled in the study. The mean gestational age of the patients waertension in childhood, is mostly asymptomatic in the neonatal period and cannot be recognized clinically. It is important to screen and follow up patients with umbilical vein catheters using Doppler ultrasonography in terms of PVT after catheter removal to prevent long-term complications.
Recurrent wheezing is a common problem in preschool children. It is classified into two groups because there can be many reasons for wheeze typical and atypical. The aim of this study was to identify the general features of atypical wheezy children.
Three hundred two children who presented to our clinic between 2000 and 2015 for three or more wheezing attacks and were diagnosed as having an underlying disease such as bronchiectasis, foreign body aspiration, recurrent aspiration pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital anomalies, and tuberculosis, were included in the study.
In this study, 127 (42.1%) girls and 175 (57.9%) boys were evaluated. The diagnostic distribution of the patients was as follows bronchopulmonary dysplasia (21.9%), bronchiolitis obliterans (16.6%), bronchiectasis (14.5%), bronchiolitis obliterans + primary immunodeficiency (12.3%), cystic fibrosis (10.3%), bronchiectasis + primary immunodeficiency (7.9%), recurrent aspiration pneumonia (3.6%) and foreign bodnd treatment influence the prognosis.
Recurrent wheezy children must be promptly evaluated for an underlying disease. Isoprenaline Early diagnosis and treatment influence the prognosis.
In the presence of food allergies, especially egg allergies, primary physicians in Turkey avoid vaccine administration and refer children to a hospital setting. We aimed to evaluate children who had allergies or suspected allergies and were referred to our Well Child Clinic in a university hospital for vaccination.
Charts of all children referred to our clinic due to concerns for allergies in the last two years, were reviewed. Demographic data, laboratory evaluation and reactions after immunization were recorded.
A total of 122 children with or without a confirmed diagnosis of allergies were referred by primary physicians. In the history, 50 children (43.5%) had reactions with egg, 42 (36.5%) had reactions with multiple foods, nine (7.8%) had reactions with milk and seven (6.1%) had reactions with a previous vaccination. The most common reaction was rash (n=89, 86.4%). Nine children reported anaphylaxis. Skin testing or serum allergen specific IgE measurement revealed that 66 (54.1%) children had sensite schedule.
Tuberculosis is one of the oldest and most contagious diseases of human history. One- quarter of the world's population is infected with the tuberculosis bacillus. Childhood tuberculosis does not have a standard clinical and radiologic description. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings of childhood tuberculosis.
The medical records of 216 patients hospitalized and treated with a diagnosis of TB between January 2015 and July 2019 in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases in our hospital, were examined retrospectively.
One hundred twenty-nine (59.7%) of 216 patients who were diagnosed as having TB were female and 87 (40.3%) were male. The age distribution of the patients was 12.3 (range, 0.33-18) years. One hundred sixty-nine patients (78.2%) had pulmonary, 34 (15.7%) had extrapulmonary, 13 had (6%) both pulmonary and extrapulmonary. One hundred forty-three (66.2%) patients had tuberculin skin test positivity. Acid-resistant bacteria were observed in 46 (21.
