PURPOSE The authors aim to review available reports regarding laryngeal candidiasis and describe the existing evidence on the demographics, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, therapeutic options, and outcomes of this infection. METHODS A review of articles on laryngeal candidiasis was conducted using PubMed® database from its inception through July 2019. RESULTS Patients were mainly females presenting with complaints of dysphonia and associated gastroesophageal reflux history or inhaled corticosteroids use; although local predisposing factors were common, most patients were immunocompetent. The main anatomical affected subsite was the glottis with the presence of leukoplastic lesions. The diagnostic approach remains controversial, since some authors recommend prompt lesion biopsy and others rely on empirical antifungal treatment that showed effective results regarding symptoms and lesions resolution. Selleckchem iJMJD6 CONCLUSION Laryngeal Candida infection is thought to be a rare condition, with limited available literature. The correct diagnosis is difficult for the otolaryngologist and a high level of suspicion is required. The authors emphasize the need to include this condition into the differential diagnosis in patients with predisposing factors presenting with suspected lesions. In addition, the conservative diagnostic approach with antifungal treatment seems to provide effective outcomes, although comparative clinical studies between diagnostic options are lacking.INTRODUCTION The modern availability in daily practice of different DICOM viewers allows physicians to routinely evaluate computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) scans of patients in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative settings. Their systematic use, together with a close surgeon-radiologist cooperation, may greatly improve outcomes of patients to be treated by transoral microsurgery for laryngeal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS We herein propose guidelines for systematic evaluation of CT/MR images taken from patients affected by supraglottic and glottic cancer to be treated by transoral microsurgery. RESULTS A methodical, step-by-step approach focused on laryngeal anatomy, systematically looking at each true and false vocal folds, anterior commissure, laryngeal ventricle, subglottic area, epiglottis, thyroid, cricoid, and arytenoid cartilages, posterior commissure, crico-arytenoid unit, paraglottic and pre-epiglottic spaces, and possible extra-laryngeal extension is proposed. This checklist may be useful before imaging performance (to focus on specific issues to be detailed by the radiologist), as well before and during surgery for the specific evaluation of details to be cleared during transoral microsurgery. CONCLUSION Detailed preoperative evaluation of supraglottic and glottic anatomy is essential prior to any transoral approach for neoplastic disease. The proposed imaging checklist described herein represents a step-by-step guide to surgeons performing this kind of interventions and an aid in achieving a meticulous approach from a surgical perspective.OBJECTIVE In this study, it was aimed to evaluate and compare biochemical and histopathological effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), ozone and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on wound healing which was formed experimentally in oral cavity of rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, thirty-six Wistar Hannover rats with weight of 250-350 g, fed with standard feeds, were anesthetized to create intraoral wound on the hard palate. Rats were divided into four groups as the following control group, PRP, HBO and Ozone groups. 0.1 ml of PRP was injected on the wound edges of each rat in the PRP group on days 1, 3 and 7. Each rat in the ozone group was systemically injected with 2.3-3.0 ml ozone gas on the 1st, 3rd and 7th days. The wounds of the rats in the control group were not performed anything. The rats in the HBO group were placed in the HBO pressure chamber and were treated with one session (2 h for each session) of 100% oxygen each day for 7 days. Rats in all groups were killed on the 15th day and the hard palateslucose levels (p = 0.21). CONCLUSION In this study, all three treatment modalities were found to be effective in wound healing, and PRP was found to be more effective than the others.INTRODUCTION Vocal loading capacity is an important aspect of vocal health and is measured using standardized vocal loading tests. However, it remains unclear how vocal fold oscillation patterns are influenced by a standardized vocal loading task. METHODS 21 (10 male, 11 female) vocally healthy subjects were analyzed concerning the dysphonia severity index (DSI) and high speed videolaryngoscopy (HSV) on the vowel /i/ at a comfortable pitch and loudness before and after a standardized vocal loading test (10 min standardized text reading, at a level higher than 80 dB (A) measured at 30 cm from the mouth). RESULTS Changes in DSI were statistically significant, diminishing by 1.2 points after the vocal loading test, which was mainly caused by an increase of the minimum intensity. However, the pre-post comparison of HSV derived measures failed to show any statistically significant changes. CONCLUSION It seems necessary to analyze the effects of a standardized vocal loading test on vocal fold oscillation patterns with respect to softest phonation and phonation threshold pressure rather than comfortable pitch and loudness. Level of evidence 2c.PURPOSE The treatment strategy of parotid gland tumours depends mainly on the histopathological type of the lesion. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is recommended in preoperative diagnostics. The aim of the study was to evaluate the FNAB standing in the diagnostic algorithm of parotid gland lesions and to correlate FNAB results in relation to the definitive histopathological diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS The retrospective analyses of 651 examined and consequently surgically treated parotid gland lesions at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague between 2006 and 2016 were used. Preoperative cytological results were consequently evaluated in relation to the definitive histopathological diagnosis. RESULTS The cohort consisted of 367 women and 284 men (average age 58 years). FNAB was diagnostic in 604 (92.8%) patients and non-diagnostic in 47 (7.2%) patients. The result of FNAB was positive (suspicious for malignant tumour) in 89 (14.
