Adult ADHD Medication
You may require medication if environmental changes aren't enough for you to achieve success in school or at work. These are short or long-acting, and include the methylphenidate family (such as Ritalin) and amphetamine salts.
In the UK stimulants are the most common ADHD medications prescribed. They are offered first in the event of a health issue that requires a different treatment.
Stimulants
Stimulants work by increasing activity in areas of the brain that regulate attention and behaviour. They help improve concentration, focus the mind and reduce impulsive behaviour. They are also referred to as psychostimulants or amphetamines and are legal to take with prescription as ADHD medications. However, they are often taken recreationally as illicit drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine to boost energy levels and feelings of well-being.
You might be familiar with the brand name Ritalin which is the most frequently prescribed stimulant used to treat ADHD. It increases activity in the brain regions that regulate behaviour and attention, which helps improve concentration and decreases hyperactive and impulsive behavior. It can be taken in the form of immediate-release tablets that are taken 2 or 3 times a day or modified-release capsules which release the medication throughout the day.
Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain areas of the brain, which improves concentration and aids in focusing the mind. It also reduces impulsive behavior. If methylphenidate fails to work it is usually prescribed to teenagers, adults and children older than five years old. Lisdexamfetamine is typically given as immediate-release tablets which are taken two or three times per day. Atomoxetine is different from the other medicines above and is offered to teenagers, adults and children (aged 5plus) who are unable to use methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine because of side effects or other reasons. It is a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) and increases the amount of noradrenaline found in the brain, which passes messages between brain cells to improve concentration and impulse control. It is taken as a tablet or oral solution daily.
A number of random controlled studies and observational studies have studied the benefits and risks of treatment for adults with adhd. These studies compared different medicines with placebos or each other, but not all have included head-to-head studies. This study combines the results of those trials by using a method called network meta-analysis. It is the largest such analysis for ADHD and provides more evidence in NICE's guidelines for prescribing medication to treat adult ADHD.
The results show that a high percentage of people with ADHD are able to benefit from taking medication. It is important to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits prior to taking any medication. Discuss this with your doctor and, if necessary, implement measures to treat symptoms with other treatments, such as treatment or lifestyle changes. It is crucial to recognize medical conditions such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy which can trigger or worsen ADHD symptoms. In order to identify the potential causes of symptoms, a thorough history and examination is necessary. medication for add adults with an extensive history of alcohol or drug abuse should be treated with extreme care. A referral to a specialist could be necessary. Patients who have a history of developmental disorders or other serious mental health problems need to be assessed more thoroughly and referred for specific tests and evaluations as required. This can include a more detailed account of the person's family, because genetic factors are believed to be a factor in ADHD.
