A Guide To Power Mobility From Start To Finish
Power Mobility and Safety Concerns

Power mobility improves participation in daily activities and activities for people in long term care. The devices can also create security concerns that need to be addressed.

Most participants chose to take a teleological approach and give all residents the chance to test the device, instead of restrict residents with certain diagnosis which could be considered an unfair risk management.

Mobility

A power mobility device is a method for people with limited mobility to move around their home or community, and to participate in daily activities that they would not be able to participate in. These devices can cause danger not only to the individual using them, but also to those who share their space or surroundings. Occupational therapists must carefully assess each client's safety needs to provide the most appropriate recommendations regarding powered mobility.

In an exploratory study conducted by OTs at three residential facilities of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, qualitative interviews were conducted with residents to assess their use of power mobility. The goal was to create a framework that could allow the use of power mobility that is centered on the needs of the client. The results revealed four major themes: (1) power mobility meaning, (2) learning road rules, (3) red flags - safety concerns, and (4) solutions.

Power mobility can boost the quality of life for people with mobility limitations. This is because it allows them to participate in daily activities at home and within the community. Participation in self-care as well as leisure and productive occupations is crucial to mental and physical health for older adults and for those who are suffering from progressive illnesses power mobility is a way to continue participating in these important activities.

The majority of participants felt it was unacceptable to take away the resident's chair since this could cause a huge interruption to their life or trajectory and essentially prevent them from continuing with the same activities that they used to do prior to the progression of their illness. This was particularly true for those in Facility 1 who had only been allowed to use their power chairs for a short period of time and were now dependent on others to push them.

Another option is to limit the speed at which residents drive their chairs. However, this could raise various issues like privacy and the impact on the rest of the community. The most drastic solution to safety concerns was to get rid of the wheelchair from a resident's.

Safety

Power mobility lets people move more freely. They can also take part in a greater variety of activities and do errands. With increased mobility comes an increased risk of accidents. These incidents can result in serious injuries for a few. It is crucial to consider the safety of your clients prior to suggesting power mobility.

see this in assessing security is to determine if your client is safe to operate their power wheelchair or scooter. This may include a physical assessment by a doctor or occupational therapist or a mobility specialist, based on the nature of your client's impairment and their current health. In certain situations your client may require a vehicle lift to be capable of loading and unloading the device at their home, workplace or community.

Understanding the rules of road safety is a further aspect of safety. This includes sharing space, with other wheelchair users, pedestrians and the bus drivers. A majority of the participants have mentioned this issue.

Some people learnt to drive their wheelchairs along sidewalks instead of driving in crowded areas or on curbs (unless the wheelchair was made to be used in this way). Others drove slower and paid attention to pedestrians in a crowded environment.

The final and least desired option was taking away the chair of a person. This was seen as two-fold punishment loss of mobility independent and preventing access to facilities and community activities. This was the opinion of the majority of participants who were able to remove their chairs, including Diane and Harriet.

Participants also suggested that family members, and staff members be informed about the proper use of power mobility. This could include teaching the fundamentals of driving (such as driving on the right side of the hallway), encouraging residents to practice driving strategies while out, and helping them to understand how their behavior can influence other people's mobility.

Follow-Up

The capacity and willingness of a child to take part in the world can be greatly affected by a device that can power them. Yet there isn't much research on the experiences of children who are learning to use this device. This study employs an approach that is pre-post to study the impact of 6 months of experience using one of four early power mobility devices on children in the school age group with severe cerebral palsy (CP).

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 parents as well as pediatric occupational and physical therapists. Thematic analysis identified three main themes. The first, 'Power and mobility,' explained how the use of powered devices affected more than just the locomotor abilities. The experience of learning how to operate a powered mobility device is often an emotional and transformative one.

The second theme, 'There's not a cookbook,' revealed that the process of learning how to use a power mobility device was an individual process that evolved over time in a cyclical manner. Therapists were required to discover what was appropriate for each child's needs and abilities. In the initial phase of training and afterwards, therapists needed to be patient with children and parents. A number of parents and therapists emphasized the need to assist families celebrate successes and problem-solve issues that arise during the process of training.

The third theme"Shared space The study explored how the use of devices that power us can have an impact on other people's lives and interactions. The majority of the participants in this study believed that people should be considerate when using a device that is powered by electricity. This is especially applicable when driving on public roads. Participants also mentioned that they've seen instances where property of someone else's had been damaged by the use a power mobility device or a person had been injured by a driver who didn't yield the right of way.

Overall, the results of this study suggest that short-term power mobility and socialization training is possible for preschoolers with CP in certain classroom settings. Future research should continue to investigate the effects of training and results of this kind of intervention for young children with CP. This will hopefully lead more standardized training protocols for children with CP.
