Lipases are associated with food spoilage and are also used in various biotechnological applications. In this study, we sought to purify, identify, and characterize a lipase from S. liquefaciens isolated from cold raw cow's milk. The lipase partially purified by ultrafiltration and gel filtration showed a specific activity of 2793 U/mg. By zymography, the enzyme presented approximately 65 kDa, and LC-MS/MS allowed the identification of a polyurethanase with a conserved domain of family I.3 lipase. The modeled and validated structure of polyurethanase was able to bind to different fatty acids and urethane by molecular docking. The polyurethanase showed optimum activity at pH 8.0 and 30 °C. In the presence of ions, activity was decreased, except for Ca2+, Mg2+, and Ba2+. Reducing agents did not alter the activity, while amino acid modifiers reduced enzyme activity. It is concluded that polyurethanase with lipase activity represents a potential enzyme for the deterioration of milk and dairy products, as well as a candidate for industrial applications. This study compared the interfacial and emulsifying properties of purified saponins and non-purified saponin-rich extracts of Glycyrrhiza glabra, and highlighted potential mechanisms by which crude surface-active compositions, such as liquorice root extract (LRE), act as emulsifiers. LRE presented different fluid properties, in comparison to purified glycyrrhizin (PG), at equivalent glycyrrhizin concentrations. Particularly, it exhibited limited glycyrrhizin fibrilization at pH less then pKa and efficiently reduced the interfacial tension at the soybean oil/water interface, independently of pH. LRE also presented better emulsification properties, in comparison to PG samples. Emulsions prepared using LRE had lower droplet sizes when using higher oil mass fractions or lower homogenization pressures, which was attributed to 2 main factors (i) efficient adsorption of glycyrrhizin molecules at relatively low interfacial curvatures, thus accelerating oil phase breakup during homogenization and (ii) sufficient coverage of newly generated droplets due to adsorption of residual surface-active components (e.g. proteins), thus minimizing droplet coalescence.Antioxidant peptides obtained from snakehead (Channa argus) soup (SHS) after simulated gastrointestinal (GI) digestion were separated, identified and characterized. Results showed that the fraction with MW less then 3 kDa had the highest antioxidant capacity. Four novel antioxidant peptides were identified after RP-HPLC and UPLC-MS/MS. PGMLGGSPPGLLGGSPP and SDGSNIHFPN had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 1.39 mM) and Fe2+ chelating ability (IC50 = 4.60 mM), respectively. Structures in silico for IVLPDEGK, PGMLGGSPPGLLGGSPP and SDGSNIHFPN suggest at least one β-turn and/or α-helix, which are associated with antioxidant activity. Moreover, our results showed that these three peptides docked with a recombinant Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) with a binding score greater than TX6, a good ligand of Keap1. The cell viability assay also showed significant cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced cellular oxidative damage. This information implies that antioxidant mechanisms of novel SHS peptides occurred via activation of cellular anti-oxidation Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway.
The aim of this study was to investigate if CT performed in the early disease phase can predict the course of COVID-19 pneumonia in a German cohort.

All patients with RT-PCR proven COVID-19 pneumonia and chest CT performed within 10 days of symptom onset between March 1st and April 15th 2020 were retrospectively identified from two tertiary care hospitals. 12 CT features, their distribution in the lung and the global extent of opacifications were evaluated. For analysis of prognosis two compound outcomes were defined positive outcome was defined as either discharge or regular ward care; negative outcome was defined as need for mechanical ventilation, treatment on intensive care unit, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or death. Follow-up was performed until June 19th. For statistical analysis uni- und multivariable logistic regression models were calculated.

64 patients were included in the study. By univariable analysis the following parameters predicted a negative outcome consolidation (p = 0.034), crazy paving (p = 0.004), geographic shape of opacification (p = 0.022), dilatation of bronchi (p = 0.002), air bronchogram (p = 0.013), vessel enlargement (p = 0.014), pleural effusion (p = 0.05), bilateral disease (p = 0.004), involvement of the upper lobes (p = 0.004, p = 0.015) or the right middle lobe (p < 0.001) and severe extent of opacifications (p = 0.002). Multivariable analysis revealed crazy paving and severe extent of parenchymal involvement to be independently predictive for a poor outcome.

Easy to assess CT features in the early phase of disease independently predicted an adverse outcome of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

To study the perioperative CT angiography (CTA) findings of modified Appleby procedure candidates for the surgical feasibility in patients with locally advanced distal pancreatic cancer (LAPC) and to assess CTA performance.

This retrospective study evaluated CTA of patients with distal LAPC who underwent modified Appleby procedure between March 2004 and October 2017. Preoperative CT scans performed within up to three months prior to the surgery and postoperative scans, at least one of which was within one month of surgery, were reviewed. Data was collected reporting tumor size, relation to vessels, changes from neoadjuvant chemoradiation, modifications to the surgery and complications. The CTA findings were correlated with operative notes and surgical pathology. Statistical analysis was performed using binary classification method to evaluate CTA performance.

Consecutive 20 patients underwent modified Appleby procedure in the study period. KG-501 research buy In 18/20 patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation, mean pancreatic mass size significantly reduced from 4.
