This study aimed to determine the effects of chicken genotype (fast-growing and slow-growing), various semi-intensive production systems (extensive indoor, free-range, and traditional free-range), and season (spring and summer) on animal performance, mortality, growth curve, and slaughter results under semi-environmentally controlled conditions in a subtropical region. Production systems were applied in conformity with the EU standards. While the summer experiment improved performance during brooding (1st-28th days), hot conditions led to a decline in performance during the growing period. In addition, negative effects were determined for all parameters of Gompertz growth curve in summer (P less then 0.05, for all). In spring, fast-growing showed 36% higher final live weights than slow-growing, and this difference decreased in summer (16% for extensive indoor and 25% for free-range) (P less then 0.05, for all). Fast-growing in extensive indoor and free-range displayed similar weight gains in the growing period, whereas grazing ones consumed less feed (P less then 0.05) and thus showed better (P less then 0.05) feed conversion. The same situation was true for slow-growing in spring. The mortality was approximately 1% in all groups in spring, while it was 17.36 and 18.06% for fast-growing in extensive indoor and free-range and 1.39, 2.78, and 4.29 for slow-growing in extensive indoor, free-range, and traditional free-range in summer. It is advantageous to choose fast-growing if short-term (56 days) fattening especially under optimum conditions is to be preferred. If the growing period coincides with summer, slow-growing should definitely be preferred and the fattening period should be extended to 82 days. Grazing improved feed conversion (P less then 0.05) by reducing cereal-based diet consumption in both genotypes but did not affect carcass yield. However, grazing had a positive effect on fleshing. The angular and linear vestibulo-ocular reflex responses are greater when viewing near targets to compensate for the relatively larger translation of the eyes with respect to the target. Our aim was to measure vestibular evoked myogenic potentials using a lateral ocular electrode montage (oVEMP) with a laterally applied stimulus using a mini-shaker during both far- and near-viewing (vergence) distances to determine whether vergence affects the oVEMP response as it does the semicircular canal vestibulo-ocular reflex response. Our results show that during vergence, the p1 and n1-p1 amplitude of the lateral oVEMP response increases significantly, whereas the latencies do not change significantly. We suggest that the physiological basis for this vergence-mediated amplitude increase in potentials may be the same as those already documented using transient linear head accelerations. BTK pathway inhibitors Our data also suggest that irregular vestibular afferents are likely mediating the vergence-mediated gain increase during linear head accelerations because only irregular afferents are stimulated during short, transient 500 Hz stimuli.
The corona pandemic has led to short-term adjustments of the procedures in medical courses. In many departments classroom teaching was no longer possible so that it was necessary to implement digital courses to provide an adequate medical training.

We developed adigital curriculum based on the contents of our established courses using primary in-house tools, such as Cisco WebEx and Moodle. We then performed astudent survey to evaluate the implementation of the concept.

The evaluation showed good ratings according to teaching content and didactics. The communication with the students and between each other was also considered good. Students assessed attention during the course to be equivalent in comparison to classroom teaching. As expected, the training of practical skills was evaluated as poor. For future courses most of the students could imagine acombination of digital and classroom teaching.

Implementing adigital course was asudden challenge for students and tutors. With suitable software solutions and good communication, it is possible to adequately teach theoretical content via digital courses. Students assessed the digital training in most parts to be agood and an equivalent option compared to classroom teaching. Aremaining problem is the lack of practical training.

The lycopene and β-carotene yields when the two type strains are used for fermentation separately are lower than those when they are joint together. To enhance the yield of lycopene and β-carotene in B. trispora, protoplast fusion technology was carried out between ATCC 14,271 (+) and ATCC 14,272 (-). After protoplast preparation, protoplast fusion, fusion sorting, fusion regeneration, and high-throughput screening, two fusions (Fu-1and Fu-2) with high lycopene and β-carotene yields were obtained. The lycopene yields of Fu-1 and Fu-2 were increased to 0.60 mg/gDW and 0.90 mg/gDW, which were respectively 3.62- and 5.44-fold those of 14,271 and 1.76- and 2.64-fold those of 14,272. The β-carotene yields of Fu-1 and Fu-2 were increased to 22.07 mg/gDW and 36.93 mg/gDW, which were respectively 1.72- and 2.89-fold those of 14,271 and 1.23- and 2.06-fold those of 14,272. In this study, the protoplast fusion technique was successfully used in Blakeslea trispora, providing new ideas for improving lycopene and β-carotene production.
Whole body energy expenditure and lipid oxidation (Lox) are upregulated during and after exercise. Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) generally have a blunted ability to utilize fat during exercise, but it is unknown if their substrate partitioning is affected during recovery from exercise.

To determine the effect of a single session of upper body circuit resistance exercise (CRE) on energy expenditure and Lox during exercise recovery in persons with and without SCI.

Twenty four persons (3 groups; 7 male and 1 female per group) without paralysis (neurologically intact; N) or with chronic (≥ 1yr) paraplegia (P) or tetraplegia (T) participated. Energy expenditure and substrate partitioning were assessed via indirect calorimetry before, during, and three times after (up to 120min after) a single session of CRE, or time-matched seated control (CON).

During CRE, all groups experienced a similar relative increase in oxygen consumption (49 ± 13, 55 ± 11, and 48 ± 15% VO
for N, P, and T, respectively). The Post
energy expenditure was greater following CRE vs.
