Medication For ADHD - What Are the Side Effects?
Many people suffering from ADHD have their symptoms improved through medication. But adhd in adults medication reacts differently to different drugs, and adverse reactions can be problematic.
Methylphenidate belongs to a class of drugs known as stimulants. It is a stimulant that increases levels of a chemical within the brain that helps control the behavior and attention.
Stimulant drugs
Stimulant drugs improve attention and concentration in 70% to the 80% of adults and children who take them. They work by altering neurotransmitters like norepinephrine or dopamine in the brain. They usually cause an initial rise in blood pressure and heart rate, which lasts for several hours. A lot of experts recommend that you start low and gradually increase the dosage over a period of time.
Stimant medication is taken by mouth, usually once or twice a day. Most are available in both short- and long-acting formulas. Short-acting stimulants are most effective after a short time and should be taken 3 times a day. Long-acting stimulants last 8-12 hours and are taken twice per day.
These medications can cause undesirable side effects, including nausea, insomnia and a loss of appetite. They may also make people irritable or moody, but these effects generally diminish over time and are usually managed by altering the dosage. In some instances, stimulants may alter your personality. You may become withdrawn and sluggish, or obsessive and rigid. They may also increase the risk of developing other mental disorders, including depression and mania.
Most stimulants are controlled drugs and require a prescription. Adolescents and adults misuse these substances to boost performance. They may become addicted when they are not taken in the correct manner or as directed. Because of the dangers, doctors must be attentive to determine the need for stimulant drugs and to monitor dosage and side effects carefully.
Non-stimulant medicine
There are a number of non-stimulant ADHD medications, and the best one is determined by the person. These are prescription medications however they do not have the same effect on brain chemicals as stimulants. Non-stimulants cause less side effects but can take longer to kick in and last only for 24 hours. They work by increasing the level of norepinephrine that is present in the brain. They also contain antidepressants like bupropion (Wellbutrin) and nortriptyline (Aventyl and Pamelor).
Psychotherapy
Therapy can help someone learn how to cope with symptoms and learn new coping skills like managing stress and impulsivity. BetterHelp, an online therapy platform, matches people with licensed therapists who are trained to treat ADHD and other mental health issues. You can take a no-cost assessment and get an appointment with a therapist within just a few hours. Non-stimulant or stimulant medications can help those with ADHD reduce impulsivity and improve their ability to focus however, they do not tackle the root causes. Cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness can be combined with talk therapy to teach people how to manage their unpredictable behavior. These techniques can be learned by an ADHD coach or by experimenting with a trained therapist. Parents and caregivers can learn these techniques to assist their child or adult with ADHD. In some cases it is recommended to combine medication and therapy is the best approach.
