The interplay between autophagy (ATG) and ubiquitin proteasome (UP) cell-clearing systems was recently evidenced at biochemical and morphological levels, where subunits belonging to both pathways co-localize within a novel organelle named autophagoproteasome (APP). We previously documented that APP occurs at baseline conditions, while it is hindered by neurotoxicant administration. This is bound to the activity of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), since APP is stimulated by mTOR inhibition, which in turn, is correlated with cell protection. In this brief report, we provide novel, morphological and biochemical evidence on APP, suggesting the presence of active UP subunits within ATG vacuoles. Although a stream of interpretation considers such a merging as a catabolic pathway to clear inactive UP subunits, our data further indicate that UP-ATG merging may rather provide an empowered catalytic organelle.
Pigmentation of gingiva is an aesthetic problem. Until now, various methods have been introduced for removal of gingival pigmentation. The purpose of this study was to compare bur abrasion and CO2 laser methods in removing gingival pigmentation.
Twelve patients aged 20-40 years old with the chief complaint of physiologic gingival pigmentation participated in this study. For these patients, gingival depigmentation was performed using two treatment modalities including bur abrasion and CO2 laser in a split-mouth design. Gingival depigmentation was performed in the right half of the anterior maxillary and mandibular sextants using bur abrasion method by means of diamond bur on a high-speed headpiece with vigorous water irrigation and the left half of the anterior maxillary and mandibular sextants using a CO2 laser. CO2 laser was set at peak power 252 watts, repeat time 20 ms and pulse duration 200 microsecond which was used in a non-contact position. The area of pigmentation was calculated via gridlines in0). No increase in gingival recession was observed in any of the patients.

There has been a dramatic increase in the practice of shift work throughout the world. It is known to associate with several adverse health outcomes including increased adiposity. The present study aims to systematically evaluate the literature to find the associations between exposure to shift work and body composition.
Data were obtained using a stepwise search process using keywords in the following online medical databases; PubMed®, Web of Science® and Scopus® for studies published before 31st March 2020. Studies which compared the outcome related to the body composition of shift workers and regular day workers were included. A meta-analysis was performed on body fat percentage (BF%).
Initial database searching indicated 2311 potentially eligible articles, of which 7 studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were selected. The number of participants ranged between 17 to 7318, and the age range of the subjects was between 20-65 years. The studies reported diverse shift schedules including rotating shifts, night, evening shifts, alternate shifts, and regular shifts. Four out of seven studies revealed a higher BF% in shift workers when compared to the non-shift group. The pooled mean difference for BF % between shift workers and regular workers was 1.77% (95% CI 0.18, 3.35; p=0.03; I2=52%, p >0.12).
The meta-analysis of the review showed a significant increase in BF% of shift workers when compared to the non-shift group. However, individual studies showed considerable heterogeneity. Therefore in order to further clarify the underlying mechanisms, more and better quality studies on this field are necessary.

The aim of this open supplement study was to evaluate the effects of Pycnogenol® in comparison with controls on symptoms of post-COVID-19 syndrome and in improving endothelial function, microcirculation, inflammatory markers and oxidative stress over 3 months in symptomatic subjects recovering from COVID-19.
Sixty subjects recovering from symptomatic COVID-19 were included. One group of 30 followed a standard recovery management while 30 comparable subjects received a supplement of 150 mg Pycnogenol® daily (in 3 doses of 50 mg) in addition to standard management.
Two groups of selected subjects were comparable at baseline. The groups progressively improved both with the SM (standard management) and with the SM in combination with the supplement. Patients, supplemented with Pycnogenol® showed significantly better improvement compared to the control group patients. No side effects from the supplementation were observed; tolerability was optimal. The progressive evolution over time was visible in all targethe signs and symptoms associated with post-COVID-19 syndrome. This pilot evaluation offers some potential rationale for the use of Pycnogenol® in this condition that will have significant importance in the coming years.

Changes in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been linked to the neuroadaptative consequences of chronic alcohol use and associated with disease severity and prognosis. Our goals were (1) to evaluate the variation of BDNF levels during alcohol withdrawal and, (2) to assess the influence of putative confounding factors on BDNF levels.
Our sample consists of 62 men with alcohol use disorder, undergoing a detoxification process. Serum levels of BDNF were measured using a commercial sandwich-ELISA kit, at two points before and after the detoxication period.
