Adult ADHD Medication
If changes to the environment aren't enough to allow you to succeed at school or work you could be able to benefit from medication. These drugs can be short-acting or long-acting, and include the methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) and amphetamines salts.
In the UK, stimulants are the most frequently prescribed ADHD meds. If you do not have a condition that requires a different medication, stimulants are often prescribed first.
Stimulants
Stimulants work by increasing activity in areas of the brain responsible for attention and behaviour. They increase concentration, to concentrate the mind and reduce impulsive behaviour. adult adhd medication are also referred to as psychostimulants or amphetamines and can be legally taken with a prescription as ADHD medication. However, they are often taken recreationally as illicit drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine to increase energy levels and feelings of well-being.
The most widely used stimulant for ADHD is methylphenidate. You may have heard of by the brand name Ritalin. It increases activity in the areas of the brain that control attention and behaviour, which helps improve concentration and reduces hyperactive and impulsive behavior. It can be taken in the form of tablets that release immediately which are taken 2 or 3 times per day or modified-release capsules that release the medication over the course of the day.
Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain regions of the brain, which increases concentration and aids in focusing the mind. It also reduces the impulsive behavior. It is typically prescribed to teenagers, adults, and children over 5 years old when methylphenidate is not effective. Lisdexamfetamine is usually given as immediate-release tablets which are taken two or three times per day. Atomoxetine is a different medicine from the others and is prescribed to adults, teenagers and children (age 5and over) who are unable to take methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine due to side effects. It is a selective noradrenaline-reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) and increases the amount of noradrenaline in the brain, which passes messages between brain cells to enhance concentration and control of impulses. It is consumed as a tablet or oral solution once a day.
Many randomized controlled trials as also observational studies have been conducted to examine the advantages and risks that are associated with treatment for adult adhd. These studies compared the different treatments to placebos or other medications, but not all included head-tohead trials. This study blends the results of these trials by using a technique known as network meta-analysis. This is the most comprehensive analysis of ADHD to date and strengthens NICE's guidelines for prescribing medications for adults suffering from ADHD.
The results show that a high proportion of people suffering from ADHD can benefit from medication. However, it is essential to consider the risks and benefits of taking the medication. It is recommended to talk to a physician about this and, where appropriate you can take steps to manage the symptoms of the condition with other treatments, like treatment and lifestyle adjustments. It is crucial to recognize medical conditions such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy that may cause or exacerbate ADHD symptoms. To identify the potential causes of symptoms, a thorough history and examination is essential. Patients who have a history of severe drug or alcohol abuse should be treated with extreme care. Referral to a specialist may be necessary. Patients who have an history of serious mental disorders or developmental disorders should be evaluated more closely and referred to specialists for any needed tests and assessments. This can include a detailed family history as genetic factors have been identified to be involved in ADHD.
