Classical MANOVA tests do not pose any difficulty when the assumptions on which they are based are satisfied, while the modified Brown-Forsythe (MBF) procedure has low sensitivity to the lack of multivariate normality and homogeneity of covariance matrices. Both methods assume complete data for all subjects. In this paper, we present combination rules for the MANOVA and MBF procedures with multiply imputed datasets. These rules are illustrated by pooling the results obtained with a two-factor multivariate design after applying the two approaches to each of the imputed datasets when the covariance matrices were equal (MI-MANOVA) and when the covariance matrices were unequal (MI-MBF). A Monte-Carlo study was carried out to compare the proposed solution, in terms of type I error rates and statistical power, with the MANOVA and MBF approaches without missing data, and with listwise deletion of missing data followed by the MANOVA approach (LD-MANOVA) and listwise deletion followed by the MBF procedure (LD-MBF). Simulations showed that the type I error rates in all analyses on datasets with missing values (with or without imputation) were well controlled. Adaptaquin We also found that the MI-MANOVA approach was substantially more powerful than LD-MANOVA. Moreover, the power of the MI-MANOVA was generally comparable to that of its complete data counterpart. Similar results were obtained for the MI-MBF procedure when covariance matrices were unequal. We conclude, based on the current evidence, that the solution presented performs well and could be of practical use. We illustrate the application of combination rules using a real dataset.With a shift in interest toward dynamic expressions, numerous corpora of dynamic facial stimuli have been developed over the past two decades. The present research aimed to test existing sets of dynamic facial expressions (published between 2000 and 2015) in a cross-corpus validation effort. For this, 14 dynamic databases were selected that featured facial expressions of the basic six emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise) in posed or spontaneous form. In Study 1, a subset of stimuli from each database (N = 162) were presented to human observers and machine analysis, yielding considerable variance in emotion recognition performance across the databases. Classification accuracy further varied with perceived intensity and naturalness of the displays, with posed expressions being judged more accurately and as intense, but less natural compared to spontaneous ones. Study 2 aimed for a full validation of the 14 databases by subjecting the entire stimulus set (N = 3812) to machine analysis. A FACS-based Action Unit (AU) analysis revealed that facial AU configurations were more prototypical in posed than spontaneous expressions. The prototypicality of an expression in turn predicted emotion classification accuracy, with higher performance observed for more prototypical facial behavior. Furthermore, technical features of each database (i.e., duration, face box size, head rotation, and motion) had a significant impact on recognition accuracy. Together, the findings suggest that existing databases vary in their ability to signal specific emotions, thereby facing a trade-off between realism and ecological validity on the one end, and expression uniformity and comparability on the other.University students constitute a higher risk population for mental health problems, especially for depression. Given the lack of literature addressing such issues in France, this study estimated the prevalence rates of depression, its sociodemographic correlates in French university students [FUS], and examined whether resilience resources moderated and mediated the relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms. Participants (N = 1435, Mage = 20.5) completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the Perceived Stress Scale, the Brief Resilience Scale, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Descriptive, multiple logistic regressions, and mediation analyses were used. With respect to the BDI-II's cutoff scores, 20.3% (95% CI 18.3 to 22.4%) and 22.8% (95% CI 20.7 to 25.0%) were positive to moderate and severe depression, respectively. Gender and education attainment appeared to be moderate risk factors when accounting for cumulative effect of perceived stress and resilience. Resilience buffered and partially mediated the perceived stress-depression relationship. In conclusion, the prevalence of depression was higher in FUS, as reported in previous studies. The amount of academic and daily stress explained this prevalence. University students with low resilience level were more at risk. Interventions aiming to improve resilience skills could help to mitigate the negative effects of stress and to promote mental health in this population.Targeting the white-to-brown fat conversion is important for developing potential strategies to counteract metabolic diseases; yet the mechanisms are not fully understood. Yes-associated-protein (YAP), a transcription co-activator, was demonstrated to regulate adipose tissue functions; however, its effects on browning of subcutaneous white adipose tissue (sWAT) are unclear. We demonstrated that YAP was highly expressed in cold-induced beige fat. Mechanistically, YAP was found as a target gene of miR-429, which downregulated YAP expression in vivo and in vitro. In addition, miR-429 level was decreased in cold-induced beige fat. Additionally, pharmacological inhibition of the interaction between YAP and transcriptional enhanced associate domains by verteporfin dampened the browning of sWAT. Although adipose tissue-specific YAP overexpression increased energy expenditure with increased basal uncoupling protein 1 expression, it had no additional effects on the browning of sWAT in young mice. However, we found age-related impairment of sWAT browning along with decreased YAP expression. Under these circumstances, YAP overexpression significantly improved the impaired WAT browning in middle-aged mice. In conclusion, YAP as a regulator of sWAT browning, was upregulated by lowering miR-429 level in cold-induced beige fat. Targeting the miR-429-YAP pathway could be exploited for therapeutic strategies for age-related impairment of sWAT browning.
