Medication For Autism and ADHD
Many children and adults with autism use psychotropic drugs. Some of these medications can aid in reducing the irritability and extreme disruptive behaviors that can are common in ADHD.
The medication for ADHD can improve core symptoms of Autism and decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity. They can also reduce problem behaviors like aggression and self-injury, licking and picking or licking, trichotillomania, as well as obsessive symptoms.
add adhd medication can be a very difficult and challenging condition for parents as well as children. However, medication is not always the best solution. While medication can help manage certain conditions that are often associated with autism, and may improve overall functioning but they aren't able to cure or make your child "normal."
Stimulants are among the most frequently prescribed medications for ADHD. Children with autism are often diagnosed with ADHD. Studies show that stimulants can help improve the main symptoms of ADHD in these children, such as inattention, hyperactivity and an impulsiveness. Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is the most frequently used stimulant, and it works by increasing the activity of dopamine in your brain. It is a neurotransmitter that aids in controlling mood, behavior, and reward systems.
However, many parents worry about the effect of psychotropic medications on their children. Critics describe them as chemical straitjackets that help schools and parents to manage difficult behaviors. Some people also claim that the drugs don't address the root causes that cause autistic children so much distress, such as social interaction difficulties anxiety, fear, and restricted, repetitive behavior.
A study published in Pediatrics found that stimulants, like methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine, are effective in decreasing the primary ADHD symptoms that can cause problems with family, school and work. These medications also appear to reduce irritability in these children.
The same study revealed that atypical antipsychotics, like Aripiprazole and Risperidone (Abilify), may help with irritability among kids with autism and ADHD. But this finding is still in the early stages. Further study is needed to confirm the results and determine if these drugs can help other types of irritability which can be associated with autism, such as self-injury or aggression.
Another reason to be concerned is that the current studies don't examine long-term use or other important factors, such as the potential for addiction. Some studies are small or use different methods than other. This makes it difficult to compare the results. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD and autism, it's worth having a meeting with your physician to determine what medication might be appropriate for your child.
Medication is an instrument that is beneficial in managing symptoms and improving the quality of life in families with children who suffer from autism and ADHD, but it should not be used as substitute for therapy or other treatments. Your doctor will collaborate with you to determine the best medication and dosage to minimize side effects and ensure it's working for your child. Your child will benefit from medication to help his or her focus, be more productive at home and at school, and fully participate in the therapies meant to help treat autism. That way, your child can make the most significant strides possible.
