Follow-Up

The capacity and willingness of a child to participate in life can be greatly affected by a device for power mobility. There is little research on the experience that children have when learning to utilize these devices. This study uses an approach that is post-previous to study the effects of six months of using one of the four early mobility devices on a school-aged group of children with severe cerebral palsy (CP).

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 parents as well as pediatric occupational and physical therapists. Thematic analysis identified three major themes. This is especially true when driving on public roads. Several participants also noted that they had encountered situations where someone else's property was damaged by the use of a power mobility device, or when a person was injured by a driver who had not yielded the right-of-way.


Overall, the results of this study suggest that short-term power mobility and socialization training is possible for preschoolers with CP in certain classroom settings. The next research study should examine the effectiveness of training and outcomes for this kind of intervention in young children with CP. This could eventually lead to more standard training protocols for children suffering from CP.
