How to Build a Cockatiel Nest
In the wild cockatiels will nest in trees or hollow areas of plants. In captivity, cockatiels may need help finding cozy spots to breed, hatch and raise their young. This is why a cockatiel nest is often required for breeding pairs. When you get a pair ready to breed you will need to place them in a large cage with enough room for the breeding and nesting to occur. Ideally the cage should be located in a quiet area of your home to provide the couple privacy and space they need for breeding. You will also need to provide a nesting box with appropriate materials for the couple to use.

The nesting box should be made from wood or plastic. Cockatiels can be quite messy with their nests and may chew on the box entrance to customize it to their liking. The box should be a minimum of one foot by one foot in size. It is a good idea to look for a box that has a rear access door to allow you to check on the cockatiel chicks without disturbing the parent bird.

When a cockatiel hen begins to lay eggs it is a good time to remove the old nesting material and replace it with fresh bedding material. This will ensure that the eggs will be free from contamination by bacteria. It is important not to disturb the cockatiel as she lays her eggs and incubates them. If she sees that her eggs have been disturbed she will start laying more to replace the ones that are lost.

Once a cockatiel lays her eggs she will sit on them for about 21 days. During this time you can watch for her to groom the eggs and to eat them. The female will molt during this time as well. Once she is done molting you will notice the eggs have become more colorful and swollen in size. If an egg becomes broken you should not remove it as this can spread bacteria. Instead, replace the broken egg with a dummy egg to fool the cockatiel into thinking she has already laid her eggs.

Cockatiels can breed at any time of the year. Once dxnest is ready to mate it will display mating behavior. It will bob its head, hop around and crouch down. Once a cockatiel has mated it will fly away.

Once the cockatiel chicks begin to hatch you will need to monitor their condition and feed frequency. Make sure that you weigh the chicks on a digital gram scale before and after every feeding. This will give you a better understanding of the amount of formula they are receiving. Typically, cockatiel chicks will require about 10% of their body weight per day. You will need to adjust the amount of formula you feed them accordingly. If you are unable to keep track of the amount of formula your chicks are eating you may want to consider using a cockatiel bottle feeder.
