Baltimore Oriole Bird Nest
Orioles are one of the most brilliantly colored songbirds in North America. Their orange and black, patterned after the heraldic colors of Lord Baltimore, are a familiar sight in shade trees throughout eastern North America. They are also renowned for their sock-like hanging nests, artfully woven of plant fibers.

Nest building is a three-stage process and takes about a week, according to Cornell Lab. The female chooses a site in her mate’s territory and then anchors the distinctive nest to a fork in the slender upper branches of a tree. Favorite nesting trees include elms, sycamores and maples. The outer bowl is constructed first, then the inner nest is woven together using slender fibers that are secured with stringy pieces of vine and bark.

During nest construction the male delivers materials to the female who weaves them into intricate patterns of twirls and coils – some oriole nests are thought to involve more than 10,000 individual “stitches,” according to Bird Watcher’s Digest. She uses a variety of materials including strips of vine and bark, grasses, twigs, feathers, dandelion fluff and hair. The final product resembles a little bag that hangs like a pendulum among the drooping branches of a deciduous tree.

Oriole numbers appear to be stable in the United States. In addition to providing food for wildlife, these colorful birds pollinate trees and help with aeration in forests. They have a fondness for oranges and grape jelly, which makes them easy to lure to the backyard with feeders.

Orioles are best spotted in the spring and summer when they are breeding. Listen for their distinctive song, then look for them feeding at the top of tall trees in your yard or park. Then, if you are lucky, you might spot one of their signature bags, which resemble tiny cradles, dangling in the tree. The oriole was named for its color pattern, which reflects the heraldic colors of the Lord Baltimore coat of arms. This songbird is widely distributed east of the Great Plains, though they are more common in open woods than in cities and towns.
