How to Get a Private Adult ADHD Assessment
Getting diagnosed with ADHD can be a challenge particularly for adults. Many healthcare professionals aren't aware of how to diagnose ADHD in adults or may only have limited tools for diagnosing.
Self-assessment can provide some clues, but a definitive diagnosis can only be made by a trained professional. This includes clinical psychologists, physicians (psychiatrist or neurologist) and medical social workers.
What is a Private Assessment?
People who suspect they have ADHD will seek private healthcare in order to receive an assessment and the prescription for medication. However, it is important to realise that the only doctors who can identify ADHD are psychiatrists who have undergone specialist training and have gained experience working with ADHD in adults. Counsellors and mental health professionals can discuss ADHD symptoms however they are not able to provide a formal diagnosis.
The most effective method of diagnosing ADHD is through a structured interview and questionnaires. These are typically founded on research and compare the behaviours of ADHD patients with and without it. During the assessment, it is essential that the person be honest and open and not conceal any issues or hide information. The clinician will ask the patient about the severity and frequency of symptoms in various situations and over time. They will also talk about family history and any other mental health issues or use of alcohol or drugs.
A psychiatrist will examine the symptoms and their impact on daily functioning. This is a more detailed assessment than a typical assessment of psychiatric disorders, so it is important to schedule an appointment prior to the time. It is recommended to bring a family member or friend to help the patient and give feedback. Sometimes, additional psychological, learning disabilities, or neuropsychological tests are used in conjunction with the clinical assessment to determine whether ADHD is present, or if other disorders are contributing to the symptoms.
After the assessment the clinician will let the person know what their next steps are. They will usually discuss whether the medication is appropriate and then decide on a comprehensive plan of treatment. Some clinics offer rapid treatment for those who want to begin taking medication right away. This is typically only available to a limited number of clients who meet certain criteria, such as being over 18 and not suffering from a pre-existing medical condition that could prevent them from taking their medication immediately (e.g. hyperthyroidism or symptomatic cardiovascular illness).
How do I schedule a Private Assessment?
If you suspect that you have ADHD and are concerned about the effects it could be having on your work, relationships or general wellbeing you can request an assessment privately. Alternately, you can request your GP to refer you to an expert. You can do this through the NHS "Right to Choose" scheme, which means you can pick the wellbeing center or hospital that you prefer.
Once you've been referred, an appointment is scheduled to undergo the clinical assessment, usually within a couple of weeks. This can be done face-to-face, online or by an expert in the field. This appointment is essential since without it, a diagnosis will not be made. You may also invite a relative along to get additional information. It is not required.
Your clinician will discuss your medical history, symptoms and how they are affecting you. They will also ask how long the symptoms have been present for. You will likely be asked questions about your personal and social life, how you cope with the symptoms, and how they impact on your work or relationships. It is very normal to feel apprehensive about the first consultation, however our psychiatrists have years of experience in making you feel safe and at ease.
In addition to a structured interview, the test will also include diagnostic tests. Typically these will include the QbCheck and QbTest. Both tests are CE marked and FDA/TGA approved to aid in the identification of people suffering from ADHD, and they use an adapted version of the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults Version 5 (DIVA5). The results of the test and clinical judgment are used to provide an accurate diagnosis.
It is important to receive the correct diagnosis, since if you don't treat it the condition can lead to serious issues at work and relationships. It can also affect your wellbeing. It is important to remember that medical professionals may have preconceived notions about people they believe might have ADHD This can affect their ability provide an accurate diagnosis.
What happens at a Private Assessment?
While each doctor has their own method of evaluation, there are some standard procedures that all clinicians consider essential for a complete ADHD assessment. These include a thorough diagnostic interview, data collected from independent sources (such as spouses and family members), standardized behavior rating scales for ADHD and other forms of psychometric testing as determined appropriate by the physician.
The diagnostic interview is usually the initial step in the process. The person being evaluated is asked a series of questions designed to prompt him or her to reflect on their behavior and describe how that behaviour impacts their lives. This could take up to an hour or more. It is important to get a complete and honest response from the patient or family member. Some patients may be uneasy or uncomfortable speaking about their behavior, which could affect the quality of your evaluation.
During the interview the examiner will ask questions about the effects of ADHD on the person's relationships and daily life. They will also ask about the medical history of the person and how long they have been experiencing symptoms of ADHD. This is a crucial aspect of the evaluation because it will help determine if a diagnosis of ADHD is necessary.
At the end of the interview the examiner will complete some standardized behavioral rating scales for ADHD. These scales are built on research that compared people with ADHD with people who don't have ADHD. They provide important objective information. The person being rated along with their partner will complete these rating scales together.
Broad-spectrum scales for screening for depression or anxiety are usually included in an ADHD assessment, as are tests of specific abilities (such as vocabulary development, language development recall, memory and motor abilities). Sometimes, the clinician might decide that another type of psychometric or psychological assessment is required and request it.
Priory is experienced in investigating differential diagnoses. (What other conditions may share symptoms with ADHD). To maximize the treatment program for a patient with anxiety might be prescribed medication and psychotherapy.

These tests typically include the standardized behavioural rating scales used for ADHD psychometrics, broad-spectrum psychometrics, and tests for specific abilities.
The doctor will utilize all the data gathered from different sources to determine the diagnosis of ADHD and other psychiatric or learning issues that were uncovered during the assessment. The clinician can discuss treatment options with you and assist you to create a holistic plan, which may include therapy, medication, or other psychosocial interventions.
Once a final diagnoses has been completed, the doctor will provide you and your GP an extensive report. The clinician will give your GP all the necessary documentation for you to be able to receive prescription medication through the NHS. You'll need to attend regular appointments with your GP to ensure that they monitor your progress and make sure the medication is working.
After your psychiatrist has given you a written report and agreed on a holistic treatment plan, you can decide whether you want to continue your private or NHS care.
