Specifically, by jointly optimizing for signal statistics, device statistics, and a distortion metric, we demonstrate that single-symbol analog codings can perform comparably to digital codings with asymptotically large code lengths. These results show that end-to-end analog memory systems have the potential to not only reach higher storage capacities than discrete systems but also to significantly lower coding complexity, leading to faster and more energy efficient data storage.Diabetes is associated with cognitive impairment and greater risk for dementia, but the role of gamma-glutamyltransferase (γ-GT) in dementia has not been elucidated. We determined incident dementia including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, analyzing data from participants aged 40 years or older in the National Health Insurance Database, collected by the National Health Insurance Service in Korea, from January 2009 to December 2015. During a median follow-up of 7.6 years, 272,657 participants were diagnosed as having dementia. Higher serum γ-GT was associated with increased risk of dementia (HR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.20-1.24), and had a strong positive association with early onset dementia (HR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.24-1.40). An additive impact of higher γ-GT on dementia was observed regardless of glycemic status, and prevalent diabetes with the highest γ-GT quartile had a 1.8-fold increased dementia risk (HR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.78-1.85). This effect of γ-GT concentration in diabetes was more prominent in individuals with vascular dementia (HR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.84-2.04). In subgroup analysis, young age, male sex, and relatively healthy subjects with a higher γ-GT quartile had more increased dementia risk. In conclusion, γ-GT concentration as well as glycemic status could be a future risk factor for dementia in the general population. The phloem transports photosynthetic assimilates and signalling molecules. It mainly consists of sieve elements (SEs), which act as "highways" for transport, and companion cells (CCs), which serve as "gates" to load/unload cargos. Though SEs and CCs function together, it remains unknown what determines the ratio of SE/CC in the phloem. Here we develop a new culture system for CC differentiation in Arabidopsis named VISUAL-CC, which almost mimics the process of the SE-CC complex formation. Comparative expression analysis in VISUAL-CC reveals that SE and CC differentiation tends to show negative correlation, while total phloem differentiation is unchanged. This varying SE/CC ratio is largely dependent on GSK3 kinase activity. Indeed, gsk3 hextuple mutants possess many more SEs and fewer CCs, whereas gsk3 gain-of-function mutants partially increase the CC number. Taken together, GSK3 activity appears to function as a cell-fate switch in the phloem, thereby balancing the SE/CC ratio. The well logging is known as a technique of making petrophysical measurements in the sub-surface earth formations through a drilled borehole to reach the characterization of the physical properties of rocks and fluids. Considering the fact that reservoirs are complex fractured media which the fluid can flow through the porosities, the distribution model of oil in the medium needs to be investigated in detail and to be well quantified. Entinostat nmr To study this effect, a typical gamma-gamma logging tool containing 137Cs source and two NaI detectors was modeled by using the MCNPX code. The medium was filled with numerous matrix-shaped blocks, each including rectangular cubes for modeling the oil flow in the formation. For an arbitrary set of oil concentrations and various formation materials, the response of the detectors for this model was studied. Taking into account the results corresponding to the traditional homogeneous mixture model for the formation, it was found that the deviations between the count rates for two models reach to about 10% and 22% for short spacing and far spacing detectors, respectively. The results also show that the slopes of the straight-line fits to the count rates, which is important for the evaluation of the density, deviate between about 73.3% and 53.8% for two simulated models. Investigating the effect of the presence of the drilling fluid on the count rate of the proposed model showed that for a given thickness of mudcake and the formation density, both detectors show approximately the same percentage of change in counting rate. However, these counts for the proposed model deviate from those of the mixture model between 5.1% and 28%. It can be concluded that defining a model for describing heterogeneities of a natural porous medium can effectively account for the prediction of density measurement in logging tools.Non-invasive far infrared radiation (FIR) has been observed to improve the health of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) contribute to vascular repair and CAD. The goal of this study was to uncover the role of FIR in ECFCs function and to reveal potential biomarkers for indication of FIR therapy in CAD patients. FIR significantly enhanced in vitro migration (transwell assay) and tube formation (tube length) capacities in a subpopulation of CAD ECFCs. Clinical parameters associated with the responsiveness of ECFCs to FIR include smoking and gender. ECFCs from CAD patients that smoke did not respond to FIR in most cases. In contrast, ECFCs from females showed a higher responsiveness to FIR than ECFCs from males. To decipher the molecular mechanisms by which FIR modulates ECFCs functions, regardless of sex, RNA sequencing analysis was performed in both genders of FIR-responsive and FIR-non/unresponsive ECFCs. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of FIR up-regulated genes indicated that the pathways enriched in FIR-responsive ECFCs were involved in cell viability, angiogenesis and transcription. Small RNA sequencing illustrated 18 and 14 miRNAs that are up- and down-regulated, respectively, in FIR-responsive CAD ECFCs in both genders. Among the top 5 up- and down-regulated miRNAs, down-regulation of miR-548aq-3p in CAD ECFCs after FIR treatment was observed in FIR-responsive CAD ECFCs by RT-qPCR. Down-regulation of miR-548aq-3p was correlated with the tube formation activity of CAD ECFCs enhanced by FIR. After establishment of the down-regulation of miR-548aq-3p by FIR in CAD ECFCs, we demonstrated through overexpression and knockdown experiments that miR-548aq-3p contributes to the inhibition of the tube formation of ECFCs. This study suggests the down-regulation of miR-548aq-3p by FIR may contribute to the improvement of ECFCs function, and represents a novel biomarker for therapeutic usage of FIR in CAD patients.
