Drugs were identified in UV light at 254nm and quantified in acidic medium using UV-spectrophotometry. The retardation factors were 0.43, 0.79 and 0.81 for lamivudine, tenofovir-disoproxil-fumarate and zidovudine respectively, with corresponding absorption maxima at 270 nm, 260 nm and 265 nm. Linearity ranged from 1 - 40 μg mL-1 for all drugs (R = 0.9998 - 0.9999), while recovery studies were 95.10 - 102.11% and amount in formulations ranged from 97.99± 0.63% - 101.47 ± 2.39%. The paired t-test (n = 5) indicated no significant difference between the proposed and HPLC methods, hence comparable and can be used as an alternative method in routine quality determination of antiretroviral medicines. A lack of literature on testosterone-induced changes in cervical cytology in these patients may result in interpretation errors, especially without a proper clinical history. METHODS A pathology laboratory information system was used to obtain a cohort of FTM transgender patients on testosterone therapy (2009-2019). A retrospective review of the cytomorphologic findings on cervical Pap smears, pertinent follow-up, and human papillomavirus (HPV) test results was performed. Therefore, we aimed to determine if massage has similar anabolic effects when applied during normal weight bearing conditions (WB) or during atrophy induced by hindlimb suspension (HS) in adult rats. METHODS Adult (10 months) male Fischer344-Brown Norway rats underwent either hindlimb suspension (HS, n = 8) or normal WB (WB, n = 8) for 7 days. Massage was applied using cyclic compressive loading (CCL) in WB (WBM, n = 9) or HS rats (HSM, n = 9) and included four 30-minute bouts of CCL applied to gastrocnemius muscle every other day. RESULTS Massage had no effect on any anabolic parameter measured under WB conditions (WBM). In contrast, massage during HS (HSM) stimulated protein turnover, but did not mitigate muscle atrophy. Atrophy from HS was caused by both lowered protein synthesis and higher degradation. HS and HSM had lowered total RNA compared with WB and this was the result of significantly higher ribosome degradation in HS that was attenuated in HSM, without differences in ribosomal biogenesis. learn more Also, massage increased protein turnover in the non-massaged contralateral limb during HS. The aim of this study was to meta-analyse the relation between preoperative sarcopenia and the development of severe postoperative complications in patients undergoing oncological surgery. METHODS PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched from inception until May 2018. Included were studies reporting on the incidence of severe postoperative complications and radiologically determined preoperative sarcopenia. Studies reporting the skeletal muscle as a continuous variable only were excluded. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers. Random effect meta-analyses were applied to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for severe postoperative complications, defined as Clavien-Dindo grade ≥3, including 30-day mortality. Heterogeneity was evaluated with I2 testing. Analyses were performed overall and stratified b CONCLUSIONS The presence of low psoas mass prior to surgery, as an indicator for sarcopenia, is a common phenomenon and is a strong predictor for the development of postoperative complications. The presence of low total skeletal muscle mass, which is even more frequent, is a less informative predictor for postoperative complications and 30-day mortality. The low heterogeneity indicates that the finding is consistent over studies. Nevertheless, the value of sarcopenia relative to other assessments such as frailty screening is not clear. Research is needed in order to determine the place of sarcopenia in future preoperative risk stratification. © 2020 The Authors.
