Training
A driving licence is an official document issued by the government, which allows you to drive on public roads. It is required for all drivers and valid for a specific period of time. You can get a driving licence in a variety of ways, including taking a driver education class approved by the state or completing an exam written.
The driving test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions that cover topics such as road signs, traffic laws, and safety information. The test can be completed at any DMV. It is recommended to go through the driving manual prior to the test. You should also complete the mandatory five-hour class for pre-licensing. This course can either take on the internet or in person.
You will receive an official certificate following the course. This is the document that you need to bring with you to the DMV when you apply for an permit or license. The certificate must be signed by the instructor and have to be presented along with proof of age and photo. You can also take the test with an adult friend or family member to take the test and practice.
If you pass the knowledge test, then you receive an interim license that allows you to begin driving. You must keep this license along with your photo-learned permit until you receive your actual driver's license via mail. The license examiner will dial your Q number and you'll review all the documentation and take an eye test (or submit a letter from your optometrist), and pay for your license.
After passing the knowledge test, the DMV clerk can schedule your road test. It might take some time to make an appointment since summer is the peak time for driving tests and schools. Try refreshing the appointment page often to check for cancellations and get last-minute spots.
After passing the practical and theory tests, you can upgrade to the next level of licence. For instance, if you were a holder of an A1 license for two years, you can take a test in order to upgrade to A2. This allows you to learn more about the performance of motorbikes, before moving up the levels of categories.
Theory test
The theory test is the initial step towards obtaining your driving license. The theory test is divided into two parts, namely a hazard-perception test and a multiple choice question section. Both tests are administered on the same day and must be passed to pass before taking the practical test. The theory test is meant to test your understanding of the Highway Code - a set guidelines for safe driving. The hazard perception test tests your ability to detect and react to hazards on the road.
To pass the test you need to have an approved provisional driving license and a passport-style picture. The photo must be recent and clear, and should match your application form. If needed your driving instructor is able to help you with the photograph. You will need to provide both your full address and birth date.
The RSA website offers a variety of resources for those with disabilities who need special assistance. For instance, it provides a free voiceover option that can read the questions and provide the answers for you. There are also CDs and books that can be purchased or downloaded. These resources can be used to prepare for the theoretical test. These materials are also helpful for practicing questions that could appear on the actual test.
The driving theory test comprises 50 multiple-choices questions. Minimum 43 questions must be answered correctly in order to pass. You'll be given 57 minutes to answer the questions. The RSA has a bank of more than 2500 questions, and you can practice these online. The questions are frequently updated and reflect the latest road laws. You can also access the hazard perception video clips to improve your chances of passing.
It is recommended to study the Highway Code and practice a lot prior to taking the test. You must also be familiar with traffic signs and signals and the basics of vehicle mechanics. You will be required to answer a few questions on these topics, so it is crucial to learn in advance.
If you're not satisfied with the outcome of your theory test, you can appeal the decision. The RSA will re-mark your exam and you will be notified of the results within 10 working days. For more details, please reach out to the team of candidate services.
