Types of Oven Hob
A hob is a flat cooking surface that is placed over your oven to cook your pots and pans. There are many different kinds of hob including gas, electric and induction.
Look for features such as the rotary control, touch or position. These controls let you control heating zones by pressing one button. They also protect them from being smashed down easily, particularly if they are used by children.
Ceramic Hobs
Ceramic hobs combine style and functionality in a modern kitchen. The glossy surface can be damaged by food scratches and residues. Cleaning your stove with a regular routine and avoiding using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads is crucial to keep it in good shape and functioning effectively.
Hobs of this kind are heated by transferring an electrical current through coiled metal elements that are hidden beneath the glass surface. These elements generate heat when they are activated using control knobs. Certain models employ an element that radiates heat to the surface of the glass. Some models employ Halogen elements that are more efficient. They can heat the entire surface with repeated pulses.
Many of our ceramic hobs have advanced safety features such as residual heat indicators that warn you when the surface is still hot to the touch, thereby preventing burns. Some have child locks to stop children from accidentally altering the settings.
For maximum performance, it is important to use the correct cookware for your ceramic cooktop. This ensures that the pans have a flat bottom, which promotes uniform heat distribution and helps prevent hot spots that could result in food being overcooked or undercooked. Also, avoid dragging pans across the surface, as this can scratch the tempered glass.
To cook with greater flexibility, we recommend our ceramic hobs that feature dual ring design or 'I-Flex' zone that can accommodate either two single pots or a large pan (you'll require a minimum 30cm sized pan to allow it to register). We also have models equipped with a booster burner to allow rapid heating of certain zones or pots - great for stir-fry and searing steak. Certain models come with an automatic shut-off function that shuts off the hob at a specific time to prevent it from overheating. This is a great security feature to have to ensure your safety. This function is activated by pressing 'Power' on the control panel once the appliance has reached its maximum temperature.
Gas Hobs
A gas hob, often known as a gas cooker or gas stove, is a kitchen appliance that uses the flammable natural or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as its source of fuel. The flame heats cookware and the air around it which enables quick cooking and precise temperature control. Gas hobs are designed to be elevated, which provides additional safety by preventing the body from being in contact with the flame. This eliminates the danger of burning. However, this elevated design requires a special attention when cleaning and operating the hob to avoid accidentally spilling liquids on the burners.
The burners of a traditional gas stove are controlled manually and lit with matches. Modern models feature an automatic igniter, which makes sure that the gas is lit in a controlled manner. The flame can be controlled using the control knobs. This makes it simple to alter the heat level. Based on the model, certain gas hobs also have multi-flame burners for increased cooking flexibility.
Gas hobs require a continuous gas supply, which could be problematic if you live in an area that has a non-reliable or unstable supply. advice here require regular maintenance in order to prevent leaks and corrosion. For these reasons, it is crucial to install a gas hob only after consulting with a Gas Safe Registered fitter who can offer an expert installation and adhere to strict safety protocols.
While induction and electric hobs are gaining popularity, there is still a substantial market for gas appliances in some regions. This is largely due to the preferences of consumers and environmental concerns in addition to local energy prices and availability. It is crucial to think about the utility and infrastructure costs before choosing a type.
Induction Hobs
Induction hobs are the most popular choice for our clients seeking modern and stylish kitchens. They use magnetism to warm the pans rather than a heated plate or burning gas beneath. Copper coils are situated beneath the glass ceramic surface. A current of alternating electricity is pushed through them. When an induction-compatible pot is placed on the top of the cooker the coils detect the magnetic base and release heat directly into the cooker or the pan itself. This is more efficient than traditional gas stoves and is more energy-efficient. The glass-ceramic surfaces are cool to feel and easy to clean.
Like other types of modern hobs, induction hobs are also designed to be more easy to clean than gas counterparts. To keep your induction hob fresh as new, all you need is a dampened cloth.
Induction cooking requires you to make use of the correct cookware. All cookware, including cast iron stainless steel, non-stick are required to have a base that is magnetic. If you're not sure whether your existing cookware is induction-compatible, a quick test is to place a magnet on the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, then your pan is induction-compatible.
A variety of induction hobs are available, from budget models to high-end brands with a full TFT display and a comprehensive operating menu. When a pan is placed in a zone of power, the hob will show you its position on a full colour display, with a control button or slider enabling you to alter the power setting or set an alarm. There are also clever accessories that are available, like pan sensors that adhere to the sides of your cookware and connect to the hob through bluetooth to control the power exactly.
Induction hobs with an integrated fan cut down on steam, smoke, and cooking smells. This model is ideal for homes with limited space since it eliminates the need for a separate extractor fan. Similar to other induction hobs it utilizes magnetic fields with frequencies in the kilohertz range to generate the heat that indirectly affects your pan and its contents. In normal operation the magnetic fields are within the range of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection's standard value for the density of magnetic fields for the relevant frequency. No health effects should be expected.
Electric Hobs
The best electric hobs provide an elegant look and are designed to complement the majority of kitchen styles. They are ideal for those who prefer touch controls to dials, and come with a wide range of options that will suit your cooking requirements. Most are made from glass, which is easy to clean and can also look elegant if you opt for a white or black design. Some have bridge functions that allow you to connect two zones to make room for larger pans. While others have an energy boost button to provide additional heat when performing a task that is particularly difficult.
Induction hobs have become increasingly popular due to their contemporary and clean look that fits in well with the contemporary designs of kitchens. They cook quickly and offer a high degree of safety. They are more likely to cool faster than gas cookers and have an indicator light that stays on when the cooking area becomes hot to touch. They also work more efficiently because the magnetic field only heats the pan and not the air surrounding it.
However, there are some things to keep in mind when choosing an induction hob - most require a specific power supply with the right breakers and cables. We'd suggest having your electric hob installed by a qualified electrician. Induction hobs are expensive, and you will need to buy a set of compatible induction pans if you want to make the most of them. They can also be more expensive to run since they often use more energy than other types of hobs.
